There is a widespread crisis affecting the lives of girls and young women across the globe right now. It’s unjustifiable, unacceptable — and, for girls and young women living in extreme poverty, it can be crippling.

So, what is the crisis? Sexism.

No girl dreams of a future where she’s married as a child, denied the right to an education or infected with a preventable disease by a husband she didn’t choose. But, this is the reality millions of girls living in extreme poverty are facing right now.

#PovertyIsSexist and we’re saying enough is enough.

We’re asking you to help us fight for a world where girls get to make their own choices, chase their own dreams and are empowered to build their own futures.

Here are four different ways you can join the movement and turn your outrage into action too:

1. Tell the world sexism is unacceptable.
Sign our open letter to world leaders and share it with your friends. The world needs to hear your voice because empowering girls means a better world for everyone.

2. Get your phone ready.
Download one of these inspirational phone backgrounds to keep yourself motivated in the fight for equality everywhere!

3. Demonstrate your passion for activism through your clothes.
Spread the word that #PovertyIsSexist by wearing our favourite conversation-sparking t-shirts and pins (like this one or this one).

4. Follow us on social.
Make sure you’re following us on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter so you don’t miss out on all the exciting things we’re up to!

We asked these young girls what they’re going to be when they grow up. Their answers will shock you.

An open letter to leaders

Dear World Leaders,

We’re putting you on notice.

For 130 million girls without an education. For one billion women without access to a bank account. For 33,000 girls who became child brides today. For women everywhere paid less than a man for the same work.

There is nowhere on earth where women have the same opportunities as men, but the gender gap is wider for women living in poverty.

Poverty is sexist. And we won’t stand by while the poorest women are overlooked.

You have the power to deliver historic changes for women this year. From the G7 to the G20; from the African Union to your annual budgets; we will push you for commitments and hold you to account for them. And, if you deliver, we will be the first to champion your progress.

We won’t stop until there is justice for women and girls everywhere.

Because none of us are equal until all of us are equal.
