3 data Vines that celebrate the right to health on Blog Action Day

Do you think of healthcare as a right or a privilege?

Healthcare systems and standards are different in almost every country around the world, and it’s often an issue we debate passionately.  From Obamacare in the US, to the dismantling of the National Health System in the UK, to the availability of HIV treatment in Nigeria, we’ve all got opinions on how our health is being looked after.

Today is Blog Action Day, and thousands of bloggers around the world (including us here at ONE) are using the day to talk about this year’s theme: human rights.

In case it’s been a while since you brushed up on all 30 articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the right to “a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being of himself and of his family, including food, clothing, housing and medical care” appears at number 25.

We all have a right to health and health care, but for millions that right doesn’t translate into reality.  That’s why tackling HIV and other infectious diseases is a big part of ONE’s work.

The good news is that the world has never been healthier.  We’re getting better at preventing and treating diseases and educating our children how to stay healthy.  A really big reason for that is the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria.  Along with others, ONE is campaigning for world leaders to keep supporting this lifesaving fund, because amazingly we could actually see the end of these three killer diseases within our lifetimes.

These Vines show just how far we have come, and how one day health could really be a human right that every single one of us enjoys.
