With growing markets, a young workforce and critical mineral resources, African countries have the potential to become stronger trade and investment partners for Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet Budget 2026 stops short of committing dedicated resources to advance Canada&#8217;s Africa Strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Canada cannot afford to overlook Africa as it builds its economic future. Stronger trade and investment ties with African countries are not simply a development priority; they are an economic opportunity for Canada,&#8221; said Anthony Salloum, Associate Director Advocacy and Government Relations, of the ONE Campaign. &#8220;The government has laid out an ambitious vision for economic growth and diversification. Now it needs to turn that ambition into action by investing in partnerships that create jobs, strengthen supply chains and deliver shared prosperity.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ONE calls on the Government of Canada to take four concrete steps:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Protect life-saving development assistance: Commit to an annual $5.5-billion Official Development Assistance envelope, safeguarding global health and humanitarian investments that underpin long-term economic stability.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Launch a new Development Cooperation Strategy: Align Canada&#8217;s development, trade and investment institutions to support coordinated, mutually beneficial partnerships with African countries.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Establish a $1-billion Canada\u2013Africa Trade and Investment Fund: Expand two-way trade, unlock private investment and support African businesses in moving into higher-value industries and supply chains.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Launch a Canada\u2013Africa Energy Initiative: Leverage Canadian expertise and investment to expand reliable electricity access, support African industrial growth and contribute to Mission 300&#8217;s goal of connecting 300 million people to electricity by 2030.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite growing commercial ties, less than one per cent of Canada&#8217;s exports went to African countries in 2023. This underscores the significant untapped potential for deeper economic cooperation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Trade and development are not competing priorities. Stronger health systems, reliable energy and thriving local businesses are the foundations of sustainable economic growth,&#8221; added Salloum. &#8220;Canada has an opportunity to build a partnership with Africa that strengthens its own economic resilience while supporting African-led growth.
