As a ONE Champion and founder of YouthXcel Africa<\/a>, I spend a lot of time thinking about what young people across Africa are actually asking for, and what African youth development should look like when it reflects their realities. This year’s International Youth Day theme gave language to something I had been circling for a while. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

‘Different Contexts, Common Aspirations’ sounds like reassurance at first, a reminder that young people everywhere want roughly the same things. Sit with it a little longer, and it starts to sound like something more useful, a warning against assuming a shared dream needs a single shared solution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Warning Worth Taking Seriously<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

That warning matters because it is easy to agree that a young person in Lagos and a young person in Lisbon both want dignity, purpose, and a real stake in their own future. What gets missed is the harder part, that the same dream, chased from two completely different starting points, needs a completely different road to reach it. Copying a solution that worked somewhere else onto a country built at a different scale rarely works the way anyone hoped. That is an important lesson for youth policy in Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What This Looks Like in Nigeria<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Nigeria makes this point unusually clear right now, particularly when you look at Nigeria\u2019s youth population. During this year’s World Population Day commemoration in Abuja, one figure came up again and again. Close to seventy percent of the country’s more than two hundred and thirty million people are under thirty, and nearly seventy three million are between the ages of ten and twenty four alone. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

No country currently shaping youth policy in Europe or East Asia is planning for anything close to that scale, or that pace of young people entering the workforce every single year. That makes youth employment in Nigeria a very different policy challenge. A plan built for a country adding a few hundred thousand new workers a year cannot simply be resized for one adding three or four million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why Context Matters<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The aspiration itself is easy to recognise once it gets specific. It looks like a graduate wanting a job that actually uses what they spent four years studying. It looks like a young trader wanting the same access to savings and credit that a salaried worker takes for granted. It looks like wanting a genuine say in decisions that will shape the next thirty years of a life that has barely started. Different contexts simply put different obstacles in front of that same want.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Take the graduate example further. One in five Nigerian graduates is currently working in a role well below what their degree prepared them for, a pattern some researchers now call a paper ceiling. The usual response to a gap like this is more education, more certificates, more training, but the wider challenge of African youth employment<\/strong> is not always a lack of qualifications. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Nigeria’s case, that misses where the real block sits. It is not that graduates lack knowledge. It is that too few structured pathways exist to connect what they already know to an employer who can use it. A solution built for a different kind of gap will not fix this one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why this matters for ONE<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

This is exactly the kind of gap ONE exists to close, and it sits at the heart of meaningful youth empowerment. ONE fights for a more just world by demanding the investments needed to create economic opportunities and healthier lives across Africa, and that fight only works if the investments are shaped around the real conditions young people are living in, not a template borrowed from somewhere else. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nigeria’s demographic dividend will not be realised by adjusting someone else’s youth strategy. Africa\u2019s demographic dividend depends on getting local realities right. It will be realised by starting from each country’s own labour market, its own credential problem, and the informal economy that already employs most of its young people, and building outward from there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
