They doubled their fortunes, at a rate of $15,000&nbsp;<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">every second<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Some have chosen to do good &ndash; the Gates Foundation and the Wellcome Trust&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/healthcare-pharmaceuticals\/gates-wellcome-pledge-150-mln-each-pandemic-preparedness-group-2022-01-18\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">pledged $300 million<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&nbsp;to&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cepi.net\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">CEPI<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&nbsp;(CEPI is seeking a total of $3.5 billion to tackle the minor issues of pandemic response and preparedness). But even if each of the 10 richest men gave away 99.9% of their current wealth, they would still be richer than 99% of the world. Meanwhile, almost everyone else on the planet saw their incomes decrease during the pandemic. That includes many low-income countries, which are facing debt repayments&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/4b5f4b54-2f80-4bda-9df7-9e74a3c8a66a\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">45% higher than last year<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, while experiencing&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/b859fbbc-5492-4d9e-9b22-bc1a4cf4dd10?shareType=nongift\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">just a fraction of the growth<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&nbsp;in high-income countries. Staggering inequality is the defining feature of this pandemic &ldquo;recovery.&rdquo;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Drowning fisheries:<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&nbsp;Kenyan fishers&rsquo; incomes&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/agenda\/2022\/01\/covid19-markets-and-livelihood-kenya-fisheries\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">have dropped by over 50%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&nbsp;during the pandemic, due to curfews and other movement restrictions meant to curb COVID&rsquo;s spread. Pre-pandemic, 70% of Kenya&rsquo;s coastal communities relied on this source of income and animal protein. Consequently, food security is a persistent and growing concern in the country. While the Kenyan government provided direct financial assistance to cushion the impacts of its 120 containment policies,&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/agenda\/2022\/01\/covid19-markets-and-livelihood-kenya-fisheries\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">studies from the World Economic Forum<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&nbsp;show that they had mixed results: Some received direct food aid, some cash, and some are still waiting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Going global:<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&nbsp;If your city and social media feed was flooded with ONE&rsquo;s calls to end the pandemic this week, you&rsquo;re far from alone. There isn&rsquo;t enough supply to ensure global access, and wealthier countries have already bought up most of the pills available in early 2022. While some generic versions are in production in India and Bangladesh, those won&rsquo;t be widely available until later this year. Another complicating factor: prescriptions for the pills require positive COVID tests, which are currently in&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rnz.co.nz\/news\/world\/459241\/how-do-we-respond-to-the-global-shortage-of-rapid-antigen-tests\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">high demand and short supply<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. We won&rsquo;t lie, this gives us some nasty d&eacute;j&agrave; vu. But with&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/global-health\/science-and-disease\/pharmaceutical-leaders-admit-dismally-failed-global-covid-vaccine\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">growing admissions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&nbsp;that the pharmaceutical industry has &ldquo;dismally failed&rdquo; the world during the pandemic, with &ldquo;everybody&hellip; ashamed and embarrassed,&rdquo; perhaps companies can seize this opportunity to redeem themselves.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>In Africa, for Africa:<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&nbsp;South-African born US billionaire Patrick Soon-Shiong is&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.moneyweb.co.za\/news\/south-africa\/billionaire-soon-shiong-launches-1bn-dose-vaccine-plant-in-cape-town\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">backing a COVID-19 vaccine plant<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&nbsp;in South Africa, with the aim to produce a billion vaccines per year starting in 2025. The plant would be the largest on the continent with an aim to produce vaccines &ldquo;in Africa, for Africa.&rdquo; But there&rsquo;s a catch: the plant will only go ahead if the mRNA-based COVID vaccines Soon-Shiong funded are successful in trials. Not exactly a given, and a South African study found that booster shots of mRNA vaccines&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-01-19\/mrna-boosters-don-t-block-omicron-south-african-study-shows?utm_content=business&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;cmpid=socialflow-twitter-business&amp;utm_source=twitter&amp;utm_campaign=socialflow-organic\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">didn&rsquo;t stop infection<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&nbsp;from Omicron.&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Elsewhere,&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessdailyafrica.com\/bd\/economy\/kenya-invites-bidders-covid-19-vaccine-factory-3687706\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Kenya is seeking bidders<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&nbsp;to design, build, commission, and maintain a vaccine manufacturing facility. In the meantime, the African CDC&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/africa\/africa-cdc-says-it-plans-talk-merck-about-covid-pill-2022-01-20\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">is asking<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&nbsp;that donated vaccines come with a 3-6 month shelf life to allow countries adequate time to use them.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Uganda be kidding:<\/strong>&nbsp;<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Nearly a third<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&nbsp;of Uganda&rsquo;s children under age-5 missed their routine vaccinations in the first half of 2021. This sadly isn&rsquo;t an isolated case: 23 million children across Africa and Asia missed essential vaccinations in 2020, the highest number in a decade. This is partly due to parents&rsquo; concern about exposing their children to COVID-19 at vaccination centers. But increasingly, children&rsquo;s vaccine hubs &ndash; along with precious commodities like refrigerators and syringes &ndash; have been repurposed to administer COVID-19 vaccines.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Going nowhere fast:<\/strong>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-01-17\/uganda-blames-50-fuel-price-surge-on-delay-from-covid-19-tests?utm_medium=social&amp;cmpid%3D=socialflow-twitter-africa&amp;utm_campaign=socialflow-organic&amp;utm_source=twitter&amp;utm_content=africa\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Limited access to COVID tests<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&nbsp;are being blamed for a nearly 50% spike in Uganda&rsquo;s oil prices. At some petrol stations,&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.africanews.com\/2022\/01\/18\/uganda-fuel-shortage-sends-prices-skyrocketing\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">prices increased threefold<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&nbsp;(up to 12,000 Ugandan shillings from 4,000). Others&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.africanews.com\/2022\/01\/18\/uganda-fuel-shortage-sends-prices-skyrocketing\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ran out of fuel entirely<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, leaving motorists stranded. Fuel delivery drivers are required to show a negative test when crossing the Kenyan border into Uganda, but tests are scarce and expensive, thanks to an Omicron wave. Along with long customs delays, delivery driver&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.ug\/oil-city-hoima-unhappy-as-fuel-prices-hit-sh10000\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">strikes and protests<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&nbsp;(and the occasional&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RedPepperUG\/status\/1482934945492488193\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">roadside football match<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">) have erupted at the border, pushing up fuel prices as deliveries slow.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Quota quandary:<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&nbsp;Spain plans to legislate a&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lamoncloa.gob.es\/lang\/en\/gobierno\/councilministers\/Paginas\/2022\/20220111_council.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">target of 0.7% Gross National Income<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&nbsp;for development aid by 2030, following a similar&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.devex.com\/news\/france-striving-to-hit-0-7-aid-target-by-2025-99198\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">move by France<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&nbsp;in 2021. The Spanish government intends to target sub-Saharan Africa and the Sahel region &ndash; a positive sign of increasing solidarity when it&rsquo;s needed most. Let&rsquo;s hope it&rsquo;s not an empty promise:&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/focus2030.org\/Increase-of-Development-Aid-in-2020\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Only six countries<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&nbsp;actually met the 0.7% global aid target in 2020. Speaking of meeting quotas,&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/future-perfect\/22872438\/covax-omicron-covid-19-vaccine-global-inequity\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the surge in COVAX vaccine deliveries<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&nbsp;at the end of 2021 has kindled optimism that it may deliver on its vaccine promises in 2022.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Kick off campaign:<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&nbsp;C&ocirc;te d&rsquo;Ivoire is&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/africa\/ivory-coast-uses-soccer-spur-covid-19-vaccination-2022-01-13\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">boosting vaccination<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&nbsp;rates using the allure of football during the Africa Cup of Nations. Tests, masks, and vaccines are available for fans at dedicated zones in the government&rsquo;s creative attempt to kick its vaccine campaign into high gear. With only&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/dev.one.org\/africa\/issues\/covid-19-tracker\/explore-vaccines\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">8% of the country&rsquo;s population<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&nbsp;fully vaccinated, the strategy aims to double the rate by the end of June.
