Corruption hinders progress to change the world for the better. In Africa specifically, it is a major barrier to economic growth and development, and for decades,  it has been the main driver of many Africans’ distrust in public institutions. It is such a barrier that when citizens of African countries speak up against it, there is usually a high chance of r<\/span>etaliation or negative consequences<\/span><\/a>. In 2019, Zimbabwean artist Platinum Prince was <\/span>abducted by armed men<\/span><\/a> following the release of a video that spoke out against the government. <\/span><\/p>\n

There are, however, a few people who are bold enough to challenge this and to speak out against corruption without the fear of retaliation. Musicians and artists on the continent have a history of Musicians and artists on the continent have a history of using music to tap into the frustrations of young Africans, spread messages of inspiration and call for change. From Fela Kuti’s songs against Nigeria’s oppressive military regime in the 1970s to the most recent story of Bobi Wine speaking out against corruption, social media taxation, and the 73-year-old president’s continued grip on power, African artists have continuously risked their lives to speak out openly against corruption. <\/span><\/p>\n

This is why ONE and the <\/span>Accountability<\/span><\/a> Lab partnered with <\/span>Trace Africa<\/span><\/a> and the <\/span>African Union<\/span><\/a> to celebrate those artists and musicians with the <\/span>2021 Accountability Music Awards<\/span><\/a> (AMAs).<\/span><\/p>\n

About the AMAs<\/b><\/h3>\n

The Accountability Music Awards are designed to recognize courageous African musicians and artists who are challenging corruption on the continent. These artists and musicians consistently use their music to spotlight the negative impacts that corruption and a lack of transparent and accountable government institutions have on our communities. <\/span><\/p>\n

Previously Lagos-based musician, Chioma “Cill” Ogbonna, was the winner of the 2019 Accountability Awards for her song “All You’ve Got.” <\/span><\/p>\n

This is where you, our supporters, come in. We need you to nominate your favorite artists and musicians who are challenging corruption on the continent to be a contender for the 2021 AMAs!<\/span><\/p>\n

Nominations are <\/span>now open<\/span><\/a> and will close on Wednesday, 20 October. After that, we’ll kick off the voting process, and the official winner of the 2021 AMAs will be announced on International Anti-Corruption Day on 9 December.<\/span><\/p>\n
