In a speech, President Barroso reaffirmed the EU\u2019s commitment to the GAVI vaccines alliance as well as treatments for HIV\/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria through the Global Fund.<\/p>\n<p>Eloise Todd, Brussels Director of ONE said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe warmly welcome the President and Commissioner\u2019s renewed support for the GAVI vaccines programme and the Global Fund to Fight Aids, Tuberculosis and Malaria. As the EU finalises the details of its long term budget for 2014-2020, it must put its money where its mouth is.\u00a0 President Barroso and Commissioner Piebalgs should commit to spending at least EUR 50m every year on GAVI to make sure children in the world\u2019s poorest countries get the start in life they need.\u00a0 The Commission must also support the next long-term Global Fund programme at least at today\u2019s level.\u00a0 EU leadership can make this happen, and will also encourage other donors to increase their ambition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Notes to editors:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Full text of Barroso speech: <a href=\"http:\/\/europa.eu\/rapid\/press-release_SPEECH-13-367_en.htm\">http:\/\/europa.eu\/rapid\/press-release_SPEECH-13-367_en.htm<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Since 2000, GAVI (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.gavialliance.org\/\">http:\/\/www.gavialliance.org\/<\/a>) has supported the immunisation of more than 370 million children.<\/li>\n<li>GAVI funded vaccines could help avert 23 million deaths in 73 countries from 2011-20, and over half of the expected deaths averted would be in Africa.<\/li>\n<li>Today, April 25<sup>th<\/sup> is World Malaria Day, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.worldmalariaday.org\">http:\/\/www.worldmalariaday.org<\/a><\/li>\n<li>After increases in funding from 2004-2009, global funding for malaria prevention and control levelled off between 2010 and 2012, and could threaten to reverse the remarkable recent gains in the fight against one of the world\u2019s leading infectious killers.
