{"id":15442,"date":"2013-03-13T13:24:33","date_gmt":"2013-03-13T13:24:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/staging.one.org\/international\/?post_type=one_press&amp;p=15442"},"modified":"2013-03-13T13:24:33","modified_gmt":"2013-03-13T13:24:33","slug":"one-welcomes-eu-nutrition-proposals","status":"publish","type":"one_press","link":"https:\/\/www.one.org\/africa\/press\/one-welcomes-eu-nutrition-proposals\/","title":{"rendered":"ONE welcomes EU nutrition proposals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The European Commission has announced plans to boost efforts to tackle malnutrition as a key part of its future development aid strategy.<\/p>\n<p>Responding to the proposals, Eloise Todd, Brussels Director of ONE said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is absurd and shocking that millions of children, particularly in Africa, still suffer throughout their lives because of stunting caused by under-nutrition during their mother\u2019s pregnancy or early in life.\u00a0 We welcome the European Commission\u2019s renewed commitment today to tackle this avoidable but under-reported problem.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Commission has said it will align this work with partner countries\u2019 national plans; that\u2019s good news.\u00a0 Supporting locally-developed solutions for tackling maternal and child malnutrition is the right approach and one we hope will be adopted by the G8 countries later this year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe proposals announced today also include new methods for tracking investments and measuring the results of nutrition projects.\u00a0 This is crucial to ensuring money is well targeted and well spent \u2013 and also something that other countries should look to copy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Notes to editors:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The new European Commission nutrition proposals can be downloaded here: <a href=\"http:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/europeaid\/documents\/enhancing_maternal-child_nutrition_in_external_assistance_en.pdf\">http:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/europeaid\/documents\/enhancing_maternal-child_nutrition_in_external_assistance_en.pdf<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Stunting is defined as low height for age; under-nutrition can be a primary cause.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>ONE is a global advocacy and campaigning organisation backed by more than 3 million people from around the world dedicated to fighting extreme poverty and preventable disease, particularly in Africa.
