{"id":146785,"date":"2019-06-07T16:02:18","date_gmt":"2019-06-07T16:02:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.one.org\/africa\/?post_type=one_press&#038;p=146785"},"modified":"2023-09-05T13:34:46","modified_gmt":"2023-09-05T13:34:46","slug":"emir-sanusi-drums-support-for-girl-child-education","status":"publish","type":"one_press","link":"https:\/\/www.one.org\/africa\/press\/emir-sanusi-drums-support-for-girl-child-education\/","title":{"rendered":"Emir Sanusi drums support for girl-child education"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>JOHANNESBURG<\/b>\u00a0\u2014 During the recent Eid-el-Fitr celebrations, traditional ruler and Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II announced his support for girl\u2019s education, urging political leaders at all levels to give priority to female education as they did with their male counterparts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In response,\u00a0<b>Rudo Kwaramba-Kayombo<\/b>, ONE in Africa Executive Director, said:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe commend the leadership of\u00a0the\u00a0Emir of Kano, Sanusi II, as a\u00a0traditional and\u00a0religious leader\u00a0as well\u00a0as an advocate for social change. Education is one of the most powerful weapons in the fight against extreme poverty, yet 130 million girls across the world are out of school. Because they are denied an education, these 130 million girls, of which\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/data.uis.unesco.org\/\"><span class=\"s2\">56 million<\/span><\/a><\/span><span class=\"s3\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">are in Africa don\u2019t have a fair chance to live a decent and productive life, and the entire world misses out by not benefitting from their potential.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThe\u00a0Emir\u2019s\u00a0support for more girls to be in school puts a needed spotlight on the fact that Government and community leaders at the national and local levels must work together to break every barrier to girls education, measure every outcome, and invest in teachers.
