Girls Count
In 2017 ONE launched the Girls Count campaign to fight the fact that over 130 million girls were out of school around the world. If these out-of-school girls formed a country, it would be the 10th largest in the world.
More than 750,000 supporters around the world signed our petition telling world leaders to end this global crisis, and 30,000 ONE supporters sang, danced, painted, made posters, and shouted from the rooftops to tell the world that all #GirlsCount.
WHAT WE DID
- On 8 March — International Women’s Day — we made the world pay attention to these girls by counting them. One by one. Out loud. All the way to 130 million.
- We asked supporters to claim a number and record a video of themselves counting it out loud for our elected officials to hear and see.
- We participated at the Global Partnership for Education replenishment in Dakar, Senegal, to tell world leaders that all #GirlsCount and all girls have the right to a decent education.
- We also had three brilliant ONE Global Activists on the ground in Dakar, who were chosen by the GPE for a youth delegation. They wrote a statement to world leaders and held them to account on their pledges at the replenishment. They even met with summit hosts French President Emmanuel Macron and Senegalese President Macky Sall and pass on the message directly.
The Results

ONE’s Girls Count videos were screened to leaders at the replenishment summit, nonstop for 12 hours. And they heard our voices loud and clear.

World leaders increased their funding to the Global Partnership for Education with donor pledges totaling US$2.8 billion.

This incredible funding helped enable schools to hire teachers, purchase textbooks, improve classrooms, deliver better quality educations and, most importantly, give children the opportunity to learn.
