ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY
The Director of UK Campaigns will lead ONE’s digital and offline campaigns in the UK. They will develop strategies to engage and activate a range of audiences, with the goal of generating enough perceived support for ONE’s policy change goals in the eyes of key decision makers. They will oversee efforts to build networks of volunteer campaigners, retaining and motivating these activists to deploy high quality citizen activism to create change. This role will lead efforts to develop targeted online and off-line campaigns in the UK, and to develop and maintain influential external relationships with various stakeholders. The jobholder will manage the Campaigns Coordinator and other roles as required.
The postholder will lead work across the UK development and non-profit sectors on ONE’s priority campaigns, building and maintaining strong partnerships. They will also lead efforts to build new relationships with a range of stakeholders who can help ONE achieve our advocacy goals, particularly creating pathways for authentic African voices to shape the UK’s global agenda.
The ideal candidate will be an accomplished and “hands-on” leader and self-starter with excellent people management and communications skills, able to thrive in a fast-paced and dynamic working environment, and to build diverse and impactful partnerships for ONE. Demonstrable understanding of using public engagement and activation to support policy and political change in a UK context is essential. The postholder will report to the Executive Director for UK, Middle East and Asia Pacific, and will be based at our London office (hybrid).
IN THIS ROLE, YOU WILL
- Develop, implement and monitor strategies to deliver impactful, creative online and off-line campaigns which promote ONE’s global, Europe-wide and UK policy and advocacy messages to a diverse audience and contribute to policy change
- Lead on the overall design of ONE’s UK campaigns and their execution, including managing relationships with relevant external partners
- Working closely with the UK Policy & Advocacy Director and other relevant staff across the organisation, identify trends and issues within the development sector and wider UK public and political context, and develop strategies, projects and interventions around these as appropriate
- Ensure access for ONE at relevant high level meetings, lead the setting of strategies for these meetings, represent ONE at these meetings as required, and/or ensure that other ONE representatives such as the Executive Director are properly briefed
- Lead the conceptualisation and organisation of events as required to advance ONE’s UK campaigning objectives
- Lead the coordination, drafting and production of campaigns materials (emails, action pages, blogs, social content) that encourage people to get involved and take action, grow our support, and improve engagement.
- Track and utilise current research, best practice and insights to inform our campaign planning and approaches.
- Embracing new technologies and innovative approaches to most effectively build power and wield it within our campaigns.
- Lead ONE’s public engagement strategy in the UK, ensuring a growth in the quality and quantity of support in line with global targets, with a particular focus on politically strategic audiences and influencers.
- Ensure UK activists and influential individuals are engaged to influence key decision makers and to support ONE´s advocacy effort.
- Ensure the implementation of strategies for ONE’s online content on UK social media platforms.
- Lead on the design and implementation of stunts, events and other public facing activities, including by line managing the team as required.
- Lead and support relevant NGO coalitions and networks, ensuring both the effectiveness of coalition work and that ONE’s positions are well represented.
- Lead ONE’s efforts to build partnership with relevant campaigns and movements that can help to amplify ONE’s messaging, particularly to create pathways for authentic African voices to shape the UKs global agenda.
- Work with colleagues to develop and secure new funding proposals and funder approaches to support our campaigning work in the UK, and take responsibility for managing and reporting on the relevant components.

WHAT YOU BRING TO ONE
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field, or relevant work experience
- Significant experience of working on public engagement or campaigning in an NGO, public or private sector role, including at least three years in a management or leadership capacity
- Very strong strategic skills, including an understanding of how campaigning can best work together with advocacy and media work to achieve ONE’s objectives.
- Experience of managing digital campaigns and of working with digital advocacy platforms such as ActionKit/Engaging Networks and Content Management Systems such as WordPress
- Very strong written and verbal communications skills
- Experience of social media management and creative content creation as well as delivering on strategies for various social platforms.
- Experience of managing projects and organizing large public events
- Experience of building partnerships with influencing stakeholders and establishing and maintaining strong networks.
- Excellent organizational and prioritization skills with strong attention to detail
- Line management experience
- A commitment to ONE’s aims and a clear understanding of the links between policy, advocacy, campaigning and media work
- A demonstrable understanding of the links between advocacy, policy-making, legislation, and the role of external factors such as public opinion, grassroots activism, media coverage and high profile influencers
- Entrepreneurial spirit; does not mind unstructured and sometimes unpredictable environments
- Ability to manage and mentor a small team
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, with shifting priorities
- Ability to make a strong positive contribution to a diverse global team
- Previous work or life experience in Africa or on African issues desirable
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Fluency in English required. Proficiency in other languages such as French and German is a plus.
TRAVEL
Travel up to 10%.
