We have an unprecedented opportunity to transform Nigeria’s healthcare

Waje, Bisola and ONE Nigeria Director, Serah Makka-Ugbabe, visited the Big Brother Naija house to advocate for healthcare and create awareness of HUWE, Nigeria’s new primary health care system, among the housemates.

Our mission for better healthcare

Following two years of advocacy by ONE and its coalition partners, for the first time in June 2018, President Muhammadu Buhari signed the 2018 Budget Appropriation Bill into law, providing N55.15 billion for the Basic Health Care Provision Fund (BHCPF). In January 2019, BHCPF was publicly launched under the name “HUWE”, which was crowdsourced. HUWE is an Ebira word meaning “life”.

Why is HUWE important for Nigerians?

Each year, 58,000 women die in Nigeria due to pregnancy and childbirth-related causes, making Nigeria the second largest contributor to maternal mortality in the world. Every day, 2,300 Nigerian children under the age of 5 die due to preventable disease. Life expectancy in Nigeria is 55 years (men), 56 years (women). By comparison, Ghanaians can expect to live significantly longer, 62 years for men and 64 years for women.

In short, Nigeria is mired in a healthcare crisis. A major contributor to this is our failing primary healthcare system.

HUWE holds the promise of moving Nigeria closer to universal health coverage (UHC). But people have to know that services are available at participating facilities in order to seek treatment. HUWE will deliver basic health services to Nigerians free of charge and is an important step towards all Nigerians having access to healthcare.

How can we tackle Nigeria’s healthcare crisis?

ONE asked Big Brother Naija housemates to present their ideas on how to tackle this healthcare crisis.

The housemates were tasked to present to the star judges what health problems Nigeria faces.

Housemates were also asked to identify how HUWE can be the solution to improve the health care system.

Housemates presented their ideas on what government can do to implement HUWE and how citizens can access it.

HUWE could be a transformative program for Nigeria. It is the building block of having universal health coverage for all Nigerians. However, for this to be achieved, the organs of government need to work together and ensure access across the country.

We need Nigerians to know that HUWE exists and demand healthcare through the primary health centres in your state. Though the program has just launched, it will not be successful unless Nigerians know it exists and demand access to it.
