Saturday, March 28, made for ONE happy family reunion! More than 90 ONE members based in Addis Ababa were present, bringing along 14 of their friends and family to join ONE as well. In all we had 107 people, all of them eager to be part of the ONE family and keen to play their role in making this world a better place for all.
The members meeting was organized alongside the AU-ECA 8th Joint Conference of Ministers, which ran from 25-31 March.
Among the members present were youth activists, leaders of various NGOs working in health, education, agriculture, IT, environment and women empowerment, academics, young entrepreneurs, university students, mothers and fathers.
For most, it was the first time they had met other members and they wanted to know what more they could do to become part of the ONE family.
We talked through the origins ONE and some of our recent activities, from the Ebola campaign and Ebola Tracker, to Poverty is Sexist campaign and our on-going work on Transparency and Accountability. Everyone was really excited about the success of last year’s Do Agric campaign and how, thanks to the actions of ONE members across Africa, Heads of States took onboard our recommendations to do what is necessary to invest in agriculture and end extreme poverty on the continent.
We also discussed how we will be focusing on this AU Year of Women Empowerment as well as on the post-2015 agenda. The consensus was clear: ONE members can’t wait to take action to ensure that the post-2015 development goals, to be agreed on by our leaders at the UN in September, are going to be GOOD ENOUGH and FAMOUS ENOUGH for Ethiopia and GOOD ENOUGH and FAMOUS ENOUGH for the rest of Africa.
In Ethiopia, ONE has nearly 10,000 members and the numbers continue to grow. No doubt, the next members’ meeting is going to be bigger!
A big thank you to all our amazing members in Addis who joined us for a very special day!
