Wow! What an exciting and exhilarating but challenging experience I have had as a ONE Champion over the last month. I feel like I have become a marketer, selling my cause to everyone I meet. If previously I had been speaking 1000 words in a day now, as a ONE Champion, I speak close to 3000 words per day preaching the ONE message to everyone I meet. I have spoken to so many people this month, trying to motivate them to become ONE members and support our efforts to end extreme poverty.
My name is Simeon Christian Chukwu, a young Nigerian man from Ibadan. I applied to become a ONE Champion because I believe I will not feel fulfilled in my life while there is so much poverty around me. I have become so obsessed with the ONE cause that a friend of mine, now a ONE member, has jokingly asked me if I play in the Champions League for the “ONE.org” Football Club – since that tag keeps appearing on my social media pages.
Some of the highlights for me in this first month have been talking to so many new people and explaining the work that I do as a Champion. Also, the lobbying and engaging of policymakers to advance the overall ONE objectives has been an exciting experience. I have learnt that politicians haven’t had too much experience of being engaged by individuals from their constituency without any ulterior financial benefit to that person. The work I am doing with ONE shows that we must push for an advanced stage of democracy where constituents engage with their representative to achieve an end which is greater than any individual’s needs.
Wow, what an amazing way to start 2016!
If anyone were to ask me whether I would apply to be a ONE Champion again I would definitely say yes. There is so much work to be done and I am so happy that I am part of a team making a real impact on my community and country. With ONE’s support, I know poverty is going to be history! Yagaaa! Legooo!
