How ONE volunteers are making change across Africa

Our passionate volunteers across Africa are on the frontlines fighting with ONE to end extreme poverty, gender inequality and preventable diseases. Through their amazing efforts, they are taking action to impact change in their communities, countries and across the continent.

This International Volunteer Day, we are acknowledging and celebrating every one of our incredible ONE supporters. Some of our amazing volunteers share why they decided to volunteer with ONE.

Why do you volunteer for ONE?

Mzeziti Crecencia Mwanga, ONE Champion in Zambia

For the past three years, I have been advocating for sexual and reproductive health  services, and safe and quality education for girls and women in Zambia and across the African continent. I became a ONE Champion in 2018 after being listed as a top 10 finalist for the 2017 Girls Count Competition. I volunteer for ONE because I am committed to amplifying the voices of young girls and women to push governments and the international community to commit to investing in comprehensive health and education programs.

Seynabou Sène, Law Student, ONE Champion in Senegal

I have been a  ONE Champion since March 2019. Since then I have participated in many advocacy campaigns to fight for girls’ access to school, access to land for women, and supported the petition by ONE and Black Queen to demand that rape be criminalized in Senegal. Our perseverance has borne fruit because rape, which is considered an offence punishable by five to 10 years’ imprisonment, will soon be considered a crime thanks to the future law. This proves that once again our advocacy efforts are not in vain. I greatly appreciate the advocacy actions that ONE is doing through social media and this modern approach.

Wambui Nderu, ONE Volunteer in Kenya

As Kofi Annan once said, “If our hopes of building a better and safer world are to become more than wishful thinking, we will need the engagement of volunteers more than ever.” Volunteering for ONE has been an amazing experience especially through signing various petitions that aim to bring change globally. In November 2019, I volunteered for ONE at Skills Hunt Forum held in Nairobi, Kenya. During this forum, I had a chance to explain to the participants what ONE is, its operations and achievements. Educating them about ONE was very important to me as I got a chance to expand its awareness.

Richard Kakunga Wambua, Diplomat, ONE Volunteer in Kenya

I am a diplomat and green-tech innovator. I volunteered most of my life without seeing much change in the community, a great conundrum for me! This, however, changed when I joined ONE. I learnt how to take the “fight” to the policy table, because that’s where we can ensure impactful sustainable change is felt. ONE has taught me to become both a better youth leader and policy advocate for my country and globe. I am proudly ONE, because ONE’s got us all!

Chidozie Mavice Ndubuisi, Entrepreneur, ONE Supporter in Nigeria

I am passionate about making a difference at the community level. I became a ONE supporter in November 2018 after I learnt about ONE’s collaborative efforts towards ending extreme poverty and preventable diseases in Africa. I added my voice to the movement through volunteerism. My decision to volunteer with ONE has enabled me to contribute positively on a large scale to amplify change, learn new skills and expand my network.

Blessing Okareh, Journalist, ONE Supporter from Nigeria

I joined ONE in 2016 due to my passion for humanity. As a Journalist, I lend my voice to the call on the government to improve funding of health and education sectors to reduce extreme poverty. My experience as a ONE volunteer leaves me fulfilled as a humanitarian and human rights activist. It has been worthwhile, and I look forward to doing more.
