ONE Responds to Ebola Public Health Emergency Declaration

WASHINGTON — Following today’s public health emergency declaration by the World Health Organization, Gayle Smith, president and CEO of The ONE Campaign and a former administrator of USAID, issued the below statement:

Gayle Smith, CEO and President of The ONE Campaign:

“Today’s emergency declaration is a needed step in a long race against an ugly disease that knows no borders. In order to get ahead of the Ebola virus, the international community must be fully invested with more resources and more urgency. The time to start caring about Ebola isn’t when it reaches the shores of the United States or Europe, it’s right now.”

About Gayle Smith

In 2014, Gayle Smith sat on the National Security Council and helped lead the United States’ Ebola response. Yesterday in a TIME op-ed, she shared her thoughts on the Ebola outbreak and the unprecedented challenges that have made containing this outbreak in the DRC harder and more complex than the last outbreak in Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Guinea.
