Make a call

In just a matter of weeks, US budget funding for global AIDS, hunger and poverty will be slashed – unless our political leaders act.

Call your senators today and urge them to protect these programs. Millions of lives are at risk.

Tell us how your call went in the form below. And don't forget to check out the talking points at the bottom of the page!

    Talking points:

    1. Hello, I am a constituent from ______.
    2. I am calling to ask my senator to preserve the International Affairs account in order to protect our investment in life-saving development programs, such as those that fight HIV/AIDS, childhood diseases, and hunger.
    3. Can you please tell me what the senator's position is on preserving the International Affairs budget?
    4. Thank the staff for their time, and make sure to leave your name & address so the staffer knows you live in the district and state.

    Additional information:

    1. At less than 1% of the federal budget, cutting foreign assistance programs won't put a dent in the budget deficit, but it will put millions of lives at risk.
    2. Now is not the time to step back from our leadership position in the world and roll back the progress we've made in fighting HIV/AIDS, chronic hunger or childhood diseases.
    3. Cuts to these programs mean 276,500 people won't receive AIDS treatment, 2.2 million fewer bed nets will be available to protect families from malaria and 1 million fewer families will learn new farming techniques and be better nourished
    4. US foreign assistance is not only the right thing to do - it is also good for America's economy and national security.

    The Fight

It's a scenario that's becoming frighteningly familiar: huge proposed budget cuts to poverty-fighting programs. These cuts mean moms won't receive medicine to make sure their babies are born HIV-free. Bed nets won't get delivered to protect families from malaria. It's time to make sure these cuts don't fall on the people who can least afford them.

    • 1.3 million
      fewer pentavalent vaccines for kids
    • 2.2 million
fewer bed nets to protect against malaria
    • 124,000
      more kids becoming AIDS orphans
    112,500
Pregnant moms who might not receive meds to protect their babies from HIV
    690,000
    children will suffer
Number of children who will suffer decreased nutrition

Maximizing US global health investments: Investing in the frontline

Almost every week on the Frontline Health Workers Coalition’s blog, someone from our 30 member organizations tells another story illustrating the inspiring and tremendous impact frontline health workers are making in saving and improving lives around the world. What might not be as well known is that, according to USAID, 0.0000087 percent of the US budget in 2011 went to global health programs, including programs that help thousands of frontline health workers save millions of lives.

    The Progress

It’s a little known fact: less than 1% of the total US budget goes to lifesaving programs that educate children and fight global diseases every day. This 1% does a world of good – but now we’ve got to step up and protect it.
