ONE hits the Green Festival in Chicago

ONE was at the Green Festival in Chicago last weekend and it was, once again, a fun time! Thousands of socially minded people, activists, and all kinds of do-gooders gathered at Navy Pier in Chicago for this 2-day affair. Nearly 400 of them took action with ONE by writing postcards to their Senators! This is

Calling attention to clean water and improved sanitation on World Water Day

Calling attention to clean water and improved sanitation on World Water Day

2 billion people have gained access to improved drinking water because of smart investment in water and sanitation. This is resulting in 1,656 children’s lives saved every day. Now that’s great news, but there is still much to do – 3.4 million people die each year from water, sanitation and hygiene related causes. Completely preventable, stupid, loss of life that should not be allowed in today’s world. Yet it goes on. Women and girls are most affected by this tragic reality, keeping them trapped in extreme poverty and devastated by preventable disease.

Advocacy in Action meetings in the Great Lakes region

Advocacy in Action meetings in the Great Lakes region

International development accounts for less than 1 percent of the US budget. A small piece of the pie, which helps save, protect and feed hundreds of millions of people. Our wonderful ONE volunteers throughout the country are on a mission to make sure that people in their communities are educated about these facts and issues,

ONE Chicago’s World AIDS Day happy hour

ONE Chicago’s World AIDS Day happy hour

This World AIDS Day, ONE members tried something different in Chicago – we got together over drinks to talk about the global fight against AIDS and take action by writing letters to our Illinois Senators Kirk and Durbin. Writing letters is one of the most effective ways of getting your voice heard by your elected

ONE at SalsaFest in Florida

ONE at SalsaFest in Florida

Salsa music, South Florida weather, and helping save lives. What could be better?  ONE was invited this past weekend to table at the 6th annual Salsa Fest in Greenacres, FL.  The sounds of tropical salsa beats and tempting smells of Latin specialties sizzling on the grill did not distract us from our goal of making

Three amazing Obama events in Wisconsin

Three amazing Obama events in Wisconsin

President Obama visited the swing state of Wisconsin three times over a week-long period earlier this month. ONE members were there, front and center, braving the cold during each one of the President’s appearances, for the opportunity to remind him of the importance of fighting extreme poverty and preventable disease around the world and to

More messages delivered to Wisconsin US Senate candidates

More messages delivered to Wisconsin US Senate candidates

In the final days of the campaign, ONE members took time to hand-deliver more postcards to Wisconsin’s US Senate candidate Tommy Thompson and Tammy Baldwin’s offices. These postcards have messages asking the candidates, if elected, to support poverty-based foreign assistance programs like Feed the Future – which helps train people how to modernize their farming

ONE at Michelle Obama’s rally in Wisconsin

ONE at Michelle Obama’s rally in Wisconsin

I attended an interesting political rally for Michelle Obama in Racine, Wisconsin recently. As I waited in the several-hour-long line of Wisconsinites excited to see the First Lady, I was able to recruit a new ONE volunteer! Michelle Irvin told me that this was her first time attending a political event and she was looking forward to

Marco Rubio gets our message (and our wristband) loud and clear

As part of our bipartisan ONE Vote campaign, ONE members are on the campaign trail with candidates for office throughout the country urging them to make extreme poverty and global health foreign policy priorities.   I attended an event with Florida Senator Marco Rubio in Waukesha, Wisconsin today. He is campaigning in Wisconsin for Mitt Romney and

Whatever it takes

Whatever it takes

Vivian Onano, ONE Congressional district leader from Kenosha, Wis., recounts her experience getting a letter to her congressman, Paul Ryan, signed by three influential leaders in her town. When you are firm about what you want, then no door can be closed on you. I certainly learned that on Wednesday when I managed to schedule

‘Be a voice, not an echo’

‘Be a voice, not an echo’

ONE at Chicago AIDS Run 2012 5,500 people died of AIDS today. These are mothers, fathers, daughters, brothers, sisters, and friends whose stories are often left in the shadows of oblivion. Their voices rendered silent from the ability to live full and productive lives —5,500 voices silenced by a preventable disease. Photo caption: ONE Regional

Braving Michigan weather (and nerves) to advocate with Rep. Amash

It was sprinkling outside when I made my way up out of the parking garage next to the federal building to meet with Jordan Bush, the District Representative of Rep. Justin Amash in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
