More exciting news from the ONE store! Our newest addition of African artisan products comes from Raven & Lily, a company that helps employ marginalized women in Ethiopia, India, Cambodia and the US. The items available in the ONE Store are part of the Ethiopia Collection, featuring handmade beads and charms made from recycled metal.
Like all of our African artisan products, jewelry from Raven & Lily has a special meaning and story. The Ethiopian artisans are women living with HIV/AIDS on Entoto Mountain, a place where those suffering from sickness come because it is believed that there is holy water that might cure them of disease. Most women do not have access to health or medical care and resort to begging in order to survive. Raven & Lily employs women in the area and provides the women and their families with access to ARVs and educational opportunities to help them find their way off the mountain and out of poverty.

Raven & Lily’s design team travels to Ethiopia to collaborate with artisans on product design. Village bead makers melt recycled metal and reshape them into the beads featured in their jewelry. Women employed by Raven & Lily take the beads and transform them into beautiful items you see for sale. Then, the products are shipped to Raven and Lily’s studio in Austin, Texas to be sold online.
It might seem like a simple process, but it makes a huge difference in these women’s lives.
In 2011 alone, Raven & Lilly proceeds provided:
- 30 women with vitamins and medication
- 12 scholarships to children
- Tuition for 10 women to enroll in a 6-month English conversation course
- Tuition for 3 women to enroll in a micro-enterprise training program
- The cost of 3 community health seminars (reaching over 100 women in the community)
100 percent of net proceeds support Raven & Lily’s mission to empower women.
