Girl Rising tells the stories of 9 extraordinary girls from 9 different countries to communicate one simple but powerful truth: Educate girls and you will change the world. The documentary is part of a larger movement to empower women and girls and advocate for girls’ education all over the world. Educating women and girls is about more than providing children with equal access to schooling, though that would be reason enough. Educating women and girls has proven to bring about the largest returns on investment in the developing world. Besides the immediate impact on herself and her family, educating a woman or girl has the potential to change her community, nation, and the broader region by empowering them with information to help reduce poverty, violence and disease, not to mention their potential to contribute to surrounding economic and political systems. Educated mothers are twice as likely to enroll their children in school and vaccinate them against fully preventable but fatal diseases.
