Co-founders Greer Valley and Thembalezwe Mntambo, both South Africans living in Cape Town, wanted to find a common thread between their interest in fashion and their African upbringing. Kushn was born out of a collaboration with craftsmen and weavers from South Africa, Zimbabwe, Ghana and Ethiopia. Their customers, who they describe as “creatively inclined citizens of the world”, come from the US, France, UK, Germany, Holland and Scandinavia.

But it’s not just about style for Greer and Themba-they believe in the importance of creativity as a mechanism of survival for those living in extreme poverty. Using their brand to unlock creative potential and become a part of a sustainable model to fight poverty, Greer and Themba’s passion for preserving artisan practices is seen in their beautifully crafted products. They explore using woven textiles like the Kente and Ewe cloths from Ghana and the Nutella fabrics from Ethiopia, to name a few.
The creators of Kushn have proved that collaboration and engagement with those affected by poverty can go a long way. Each product they make has been crafted through the hands of independent craftsmen and women, creating a Pan-African network of leather crafters and fabric weavers from Cape Town, Johannesburg, Addis Ababa and Kumasi, establishing a sustainable economic cycle benefiting these communities.
