Can playing a game create change in the real world? Absolutely.
Earlier this year, our friends at Half the Sky Movement created a Facebook game — in partnership with ONE and other NGO partners — that would provide players the opportunity to fight global issues for women and girls like sex trafficking, HIV/AIDS and farming in real life.
Six months after its launch in March, Half the Sky: The Game now has more than 1 million registered players on Facebook and is reporting back some really interesting results:
Their 1 million players have…
- Triggered more than 230,350 free book donations
- Donated more $145,100 for fistula surgeries around the globe
- Contributed a total of $410,450 in direct and sponsored donations!
How’s that for just “having a bit of fun” on Facebook? Congrats to Half the Sky and we look forward to hearing the results in another 6 months time!
