Inside the game
At ONE, we know the incredible power women have around the world to break the cycle of extreme poverty. And we’re honored to celebrate that power with Games for Change, Half the Sky and a number of fellow nonprofits in Half the Sky Movement: The Game, which launches on Facebook today – just in time for International Women’s Day this Friday.
Inspired by Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn’s powerful best-selling book “Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide,” this Facebook game seeks to reach a much wider audience by spreading information about important issues affecting women like sex trafficking, HIV/AIDS and farming in a simple and engaging way. But the best part is that it also provides players with the opportunity to create change in the real world.
We are very excited to be one of seven global nonprofits featured in the Half the Sky Movement: The Game, the first Facebook game with direct virtual to real-life translation.
Each level focuses on a different issue and features a corresponding organization that works on the issue in the real world. And in each level, players can take an action and be part of a solution. These actions range from making a donation to the United Nations Foundation immunization efforts to helping Heifer International buy a goat.
Real world change
The level ONE is featured in is based in Kenya, where Radhika confronts the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Players have the opportunity to learn more about ONE’s HIV/AIDS campaign and can join the fight to get to the Beginning of the End of AIDS by 2015.
So today, why not procrastinate productively? Take a few minutes to check out the game on Facebook…and let us know what you think!
