Huffington Post: Opinion: Obama, the President Who Ends AIDS – The Blueprint for an AIDS-Free Generation released by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in November 2012 declared that we are at a tipping point in the AIDS epidemic, and that “by scaling up core, effective interventions, HIV infection and death rates can be brought down steadily in the coming years.” If funded, this Blueprint could be a road map for accelerating the end of AIDS. If not, it could be “a political document that showed us what could have been accomplished.” (Chris Collins)
The Independent: Social media promotes aid to Africa, from Africa – The ‘African solutions for African problems’ slogan “retains some meaning through the projects Africans themselves are organizing to effect social change in their communities.” One such project is Villages in Action, an initiative in Uganda that aims to “change perceptions of the poor and highlight projects that function with little or no assistance from international aid organizations.” (Robert Bates)
Devex: 200 million unemployed and counting - 25 international finance institutions have renewed their commitment to job creation, highlighting the need to “empower women and the development community’s role in helping the private sector connect with academic institutions to train the next generation of job seekers and leaders.” These finance institutions aim to create up to 600 million jobs by 2020, a target set by the World Bank last October. AP: UN Appeals for $131 Million Aid for Zimbabwe – The United Nations says that it needs $131 million in humanitarian assistance to meet the food, water and emergency needs in Zimbabwe. More than 1.6 million Zimbabweans are facing starvation this year, and at least $110 million of the aid will be used to provide them with food. This year’s request for aid is less than the previous year’s $197 million because of a “steady improvement in the humanitarian situation in Zimbabwe brought about by an upturn in some sectors of the economy.”
