Saturday was a busy day for Virginia’s ONE members. In the West End of Richmond, ONE members Lee Williams and Marko Siladin dropped off signed ONE Vote postcards from people all over the state at Senate candidate George Allen’s Henrico County Headquarters.
They were excited to meet directly with Terry Hauser, policy director for George Allen. The postcards outline ONE’s positions and reiterate how increasing the quality of life, and saving millions of lives every year, is good for both national security and the economy. Lee and Marko conveyed ONE’s appreciation that Gov. Allen submitted a statement concerning his position on foreign aid, and they shared ONE’s hope that if Allen is elected to the Senate, he will continue to endorse US programs that support sustainable agriculture and the fight against poverty and preventable diseases.
After visiting Allen’s office, Marko proceeded to the campaign headquarters of Senate candidate Tim Kaine where he met – and snagged a picture with – Jillian Martin, Kaine’s policy director. ONE members in other parts of the state were busy, too!
Volunteers in the Tidewater area had collected postcards, and when ONE member Tish McCully delivered them to Kaine’s Virginia Beach office, she was surprised to see that a number of the staff were already wearing ONE bands! Finally, ONE members managed to catch up with Gov. Tim Kaine in Northern Virginia and personally hand him a stack of postcards! We told him that the US spends less than 1 percent of its budget on programs that are saving millions of lives and hope he will support these programs if elected.
None of this would’ve been possible without the tireless dedication of ONE volunteers who urged their friends and community members to speak out against extreme global poverty and urge Virginia’s future senator to ensure that America continues its vital work to create a more prosperous and safer world.
