Spot sweet potato dishes for good with Foodspotting

As fall begins to unfold in all its chilly glory, we are all going to be seeking some hearty and nutritious food to get us through the cold nights – and nothing fits that bill better than the star of our campaign to end child malnutrition, the humble sweet potato.

But how, you might ask, will you ever be able to locate the best sweet potato dishes near you? Well, you’re in luck. We teamed up with Foodspotting, a smart phone app designed to let users find, review and recommend specific dishes, to help get the food community excited about putting nutrition on the agenda.

When users search for sweet potato dishes on Foodspotting, a link to our petition to world leaders will pop up on the screen, encouraging people to sign it right from their mobile phones. As a bonus, every time someone spots a sweet potato dish between now and January 31, 2013, they’ll be entered in a monthly drawing to win an apron, T-shirt and bracelet from ONE.

Foodspotting has a history of social activism, and we’re glad to be a part of it. In the past, they’ve worked with Heifer International by taking pictures of foods that Foodspotting would then donate to communities in need (i.e. a picture of all the vegetables in the garden meant that Foodspotting would gift a garden). They also worked with the World Food Programme and asked users to “feed back” by giving a tip-like amount to help feed children after each meal.

So how can you get involved? Download the Foodspotting app on your smart phone and, in addition to finding all of your current cravings, search for sweet potato dishes. Once you have an account, you can search for anything from apple pie to zucchini bread and find dishes in your local area recommended by other foodspotters, complete with pictures and reviews. Additionally, if you happen to “spot” a food that you loved, you can upload a picture of it and share it via Instagram with the tag #foodspotting. Spot more than five dishes of the same type and you can become a dish expert and earn reputation points for high-quality contributions.

We at ONE cannot express our gratitude for Foospotting’s support in reaching out to the food community, both locally and globally, to combat chronic malnutrition in Africa. We encourage all our members to give this app a spin and find some delicious sweet potato dishes near you!
