Last week, Arizona ONE members and ONE Campus Challenge students attended campaign rallies for both our senate candidates.
At candidate Jeff Flake’s rally we had the chance to shake hands with his wife Cheryl Flake, meet some of his staffers, and introduce ONE to congressional candidate Matt Salmon from Mesa who, to our excitement, seemed well versed on global HIV/AIDS policy and told us it would be something that would be of interest to him if elected. Everyone was fantastic to us!

After the debate, we all headed straight to candidate Richard Carmona’s rally, where we met with with Carmona supporters while Jimmy Eat World was rocking on stage.
ONE members engaged the crowd with strong facts: 8 million lives saved from antiretroviral medication, the opportunity to ensure no child is born with HIV by 2015, boosting child nutrition, and all the economic and national security benefits to smart US investments extreme poverty.
After the rally, we were able to speak to Senate candidate Richard Carmona and President Clinton. Here’s what ONE Campus Leader Kamra Sadia Hakim had to say about the opportunity:
As I was standing front-line, listening and watching our elected leaders inspire hundreds of people, I hoped to get at least one moment to explain to these leaders why ONE is the way! As President Clinton approached me, I held his hands and asked, “Mr. President, are you familiar with ONE?!”
I couldn’t stop smiling as the president took the ONE bracelet I handed him and observed it with curious eyes. Following Bill Clinton, I shook hands with and embraced Dr. Carmona! He slipped his ONE bracelet right on his wrist with enthusiasm upon receiving it from me! Dr. Carmona then posed for a photo with me! His support for something I live and breathe for, brought tears to my eyes. It motivates me to listen and learn, rally and be the voice for those who cannot speak for themselves!
The whole ONE Team was phenomenal! We rocked those rallies and met some incredible folks on both sides of the aisle. Special thanks to our nonpartisan team of ONE members — Allison and Amy, the founder of the U of A ONE Campus chapter Nick Fisbee Time, and the ASU ONE Campus group leader Kamra Sadia Hakim.
