New ONE Board Member and former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice made a huge impact at the GOP Convention in Tampa last week. As ONE’s own Ginny Wolfe reported in her blog, Dr. Rice’s participation in The International Republican Institute, the U.S. Global Leadership Coalition, and ONE-hosted panel on foreign policy highlighted and reinforced the critical need for U.S. leadership in international development.

But, it was in Dr. Rice’s primetime speech before the GOP convention and the world that hammered home the need for exceptional American leadership in the world if we are to combat and defeat such things as HIV/AIDS, poverty, conflict and other obstacles to peace and security.

“It has been hard to muster the resources to support fledgling democracies– or to help the world’s most desperate – the AIDs orphan in Uganda, the refugee fleeing Zimbabwe, the young woman who has been trafficked into the sex trade in Southeast Asia; the world’s poorest in Haiti. Yet this assistance – together with the compassionate works of private charities – people of conscience and people of faith – has shown the soul of our country.”

We welcome Dr. Rice to ONE and thank her for her continued leadership and commitment to helping those most in need. We hope that in this campaign season, our candidates and soon to be leaders are listening and will commit to act.
