Earlier in May, ONE Mom Blogger Amy Graff and I joined a group from RESULTS and CARE for a meeting in San Francisco with Dan Bernal, district director for House Minority-Leader Representative Nancy Pelosi (CA-8), to discuss why life-saving programs should be protected in the 2013 State and Foreign Operations bill.
Making up less than 1 percent of the over-all US budget, these funds are more than an expression of America’s leadership and values. Smart US investments in development are critical to our national security and help create jobs at home by building relationships with partners and consumers abroad.
While I spoke on ONE members’ efforts with our StreetTweet action to G8 leaders and the (2015)AIDS Quilt, Amy Graff presented extraordinary accounts of her experience in Kenya having witnessed US investments in agriculture training, and recently in Ghana for the roll out of the rotavirus and pneumococcal vaccines through GAVI.
We became a little emotional as Amy told us a story of how a Kenyan family had stated how blessed they felt to be able to now feed their family, and then share their access crops with “people who were hungry.” It was a great meeting and an honor to join members of RESULTS and CARE -– who have been on the front lines of these issues for decades.
Of course we couldn’t leave without expressing our gratitude to Leader Pelosi for her 25 years of service and congressional leadership on the issue of fighting extreme poverty and preventable diseases and promoting a better future for poorest people on the planet.
Thank You Leader Pelosi!
