Catching Newt Gingrich in South Carolina

For the past two days, Speaker Newt Gingrich has been traveling through the Low Country of South Carolina and is gaining momentum as he goes.

I saw him speak at Congressman Tim Scott’s, R-S.C., townhall meeting in Charleston, where more than 750 people came to hear the former speaker. Gingrich impressed the crowd, but we weren’t able to talk with him Monday night.

Tuesday, Gingrich spoke at his office opening in Hilton Head, where a volunteer and I were able to speak with him. The minute he saw our ONE stickers, he came straight to us and exclaimed “I love what y’all are doing for vaccine health!” We were excited to see the Professor reading up on his ONE Vote platform homework!

Charlie Harris, our other South Carolina field organizer, caught up with him at the historic Newberry Opera House on Tuesday evening. He thanked Charlie and our other ONE volunteer for all of the great advocacy work ONE is doing on the campaign trail.

ONE members in the early states like Iowa, New Hampshire, right here in the first in the south primary state, and all across the country have made it clear to the candidates that there is a large and active constituency that want to see an end to extreme poverty, and that feel it is both in our humanitarian and national interest. We have really seen that recognition from the campaigns in South Carolina as we continue to talk to the candidates as we get closer to the primary in January.

It’s great to see Speaker Gingrich out here traversing the Palmetto State, and we thank him for taking the time to talk with South Carolina ONE members!
