Here are some communications tips for dealing with the press. Remember to be clear that you are volunteer for ONE and please send all press releases to our ONE HQs before distributing to the media.
Always look professional, be polite and on time for any appointment or events booked with the press.
For tips, feel free to call a ONE regional organizer before you talk to a reporter.
You are most powerful for the campaign when you identify yourself as a ONE Member.
Always be hopeful, earnest, accurate and non-partisan.
Always know the three things you want to say during each interview—and keep circling back to them, regardless of the question.
Always have your two or three key facts at the ready, and get them right. If you don’t know a fact, figure or answer you’re asked about, it’s always ok to get back to the reporter with the right information before their deadline.
Always localize your story in a way that is interesting and engages your community at home.
Always have a local and national example at the ready about how ONE has helped make a difference or a success possible.
Always feel free to ask questions and advice from ONE staff.
