As further news reaches us from Haiti following Tuesday’s earthquake, the true scale of the disaster is now emerging. Reports now suggest as many as 50,000 people may have died, with hundreds of thousands made homeless.

International rescue efforts are now being mobilized in a race against time to help those affected.

Since news of the disaster first broke many people have asked how they can help.

If you live in the UK you can donate to the Disasters Emergency Committee, which is a collection of some of the country’s largest overseas aid organizations.

In other countries please check your local media and national organizations to see who is collecting donations.

You can also donate via the following international aid organizations:

Oxfam
Save the Children
The Red Cross
Caritas
CARE
Médecins Sans Frontières
International Rescue Committee
World Vision

I’d be happy to sign the petition but it’s not apparent to me where I do that! And until I am reassured about the process, I’m reluctant to forward the petition to others. What clue did I miss?

BTW, Haiti’s indebtedness began long before Duvalier. It began with borrowing money to buy its way out of being rules/managed by France. In the mid-1800s, I think. And Duvalier’s corrupt thievery just made it worse.

Hi am I being stupid because I don’t understand why they wouldn’t drop supplies by parachute. I don’t get that people would riot and even if they did at least some would be saved. Does anyone know where I can write and say something or could we add it to our petition at some point.

How is UNV recruiting those that would like to be involved in service volunteerism…especially when the time comes for reconstruction of the economy?
