I’ve been known to drop the occasional expletive, but the most offensive F word to me is not the one that goes f***. It’s F***** — the famine happening in Somalia.
Drought, violence and political instability have invited in the grim reaper on a scale we have not seen in 20 years… more than 30,000 children have died in just three months. The pictures from Dadaab look like a nightmare from centuries past. Yet, this is the 21st century and these pictures are real and, on the whole, unseen. The food crisis in the Horn of Africa is nothing short of a humanitarian catastrophe, but it is getting less attention than the latest Hollywood break-ups and make-ups.
ONE’s new film The F Word: Famine is the Real Obscenity isn’t a typical emotional emergency appeal. It’s about focusing the media spotlight on the tragedy unfolding. It’s about building political support in the US and around the world for interventions that will stop the suffering today and break the cycle of famine in the future. Most of all, it’s about taking action — because famine is man-made.
Of course it’s complex, and solutions are difficult — especially in Somalia where there has not been a formal government for 20 years. But that is not an excuse for the world to look the other way. Most of us (thankfully) have no experience of starvation, but we do know what it’s like to lose someone you love. Each of those 30,000 children was someone’s daughter or son, someone’s sister or brother. If you look at reports from the Horn, there are stories of mothers having to decide which child to feed and which to let die; women leaving their children’s bodies on the side of the road as they walk for weeks in search of food and water for those still fighting for life.
History shows there are ways to prevent drought from becoming famine, even though it’s complicated. So check out the film and sign ONE’s petition to world leaders calling on them to live up to promises already made to invest in things proven to work… early warning systems… irrigation… drought resistant seeds… and of course, peace and security. At ONE.org there’s more explanation and information. And while ONE doesn’t solicit funding, if you want to give money, you can find links to other organizations providing emergency assistance in the Horn who need all the support they can get.

It´s time to end FAMINE in Africa. All of us must spread this message. And let us all keep united as ONE.
04/10/2011 at 5:00 pm
It’s so sad to know that this still happened in Africa. We need to stop the FAMINE.

We are now 7 billion souls in this planet where over 1.2 billion are suffering extreme poverty. Poverty is a lack of clean drinking water, starvation, miserable living conditions, lack of health care, lack of education, insecurity, lack of human rights. Poverty is also lack the time, since the days of sunny hours goes for seeking for drinking water, firewood, and daily meal. Let’s stop famine, now.

Yes, and amen! We must work for change, but real transformation can only take place when local, grass root efforts are birthed, encouraged, supported and sustained. How can we ensure that our efforts to move world leaders and the governments they represent work hand in hand with empowerment of the local initiatives who are most impacted?

There’s a new “F” word in town.
04/10/2011 at 9:15 pm
This is the Spanish version of the letter. Is there a Spanish version of the video?
I’m a teacher of English from Chile, that’s why I translated it. For my students and friends.
Queridos amigos.
Yo espero que se tomen unos minutos para ver el nuevo video de ONE “The F Word: Famine is the Real Obscenity” (La letra H: Hambruna is la verdadera obscenidad) y firmar la petición para los lideres mundiales.
http://act.one.org/sign/hungry_no_more/?referring_akid=2621.2214098.C1P_VU
1. 30,000 niños han muerto in sólo tres meses.
http://act.one.org/sign/hungry_no_more/?referring_akid=2621.2214098.C1P_VU
Gracias

I absolutely agree, and that’s why I’m working so hard with my music, so some day soon be able to have a “Voice”, and “Really” be heard … be in a position to be able to “Help”, and “Really Make a Difference”, don’t know how … don’t know when “Soon” will be, but so help me God, I will Succeed!

This 30.000 childrens dying in Somalia is obscenity AND insanity. This is a shame for us and our generation. We need to stop this. Now.
My voice is your voice ONE.

“Twelve million people are facing a hunger crisis in the Horn of Africa, and they are in desperate need of help.
The United Nations declared a famine in parts of southern Somalia, calling for a widespread international response to end the suffering.” There are ways we can help NOW.

It’s so inappropriate to swear. This website should be deleted. Swearing is a sin.
I’ll pray to God for your forgiveness so you don’t go to Hell when you die.
05/10/2011 at 6:11 am
Hello Mary, they are not swearing, they are saying the word FAMINE but are blocking it out to make the point that the famine in Africa is obscene. Please read the message above regarding the aim and message of the video. Thanks for the prayers, we all need them, not for swearing in this instance.
05/10/2011 at 6:18 am
This is such a great message to everyone, especially to kids in schools. We need to get behind this. 12 million people who cannot get food and we are more worried about what the X factor results are….. Shocking
05/10/2011 at 7:05 am
Drought may be an “act of nature” for now, but on the road we’re going down, it won’t be for long. Droughts will become man-made if we do not stop burning fossil fuels. And it’s the places like these that cannot afford any more hardship.
05/10/2011 at 7:13 am
We shall cure our western societies first before daring to cure others… And now they are sick.

what to tell about this issues….I traveled most of the world,6 continents ….well, what is scary, that we don’t need to go only to Africa….what about development in :::normal::: country’s, where people suffer on daily bases…why one person need so much money that he would not be able to spent in 10000 life time’s….Why we as human kind need to spent so much money on military,??? to protect our self’s ? from who ??? what about food waste ??? there is so many issues we could talk about for age’s ,….We should wake up,stop hate each other ,and got together us ONE….first we should stop those who think that they are allowed to decide in the name of all of us,and come on for F…….k sake ..we talk to much,,,but not to much action is provided……. Sorry for my English,i am Croatian…..

As a mother and a teacher, I cannot understand why the world is letting this happen. It is unacceptable in this day and age. We must act now.

I wonder which one is the grater obscenity: famine and starvation or the poorest being offered GM crops. Does anyone consider that aspect, dear co founders.

Pay your fucking taxes, you govt shill
05/10/2011 at 1:08 pm
To be fair to Ireland’s poster boy for the Cuban heel he ain’t all bad.
I was playing snooker with Bonio once back in the 90′s and I was telling him about the time I beat Steve Davis over 51 frames.
Bonio stopped lining up his shot and gently laid his cue down on the table.
He looked at me quite seriously and said: “Imposter, you should never name drop -it makes you look insecure and betrays a lack of class”
I was overwhelmed by his sincerity and made a silent yet heartfelt vow never to do such a thing again, and I never have.

I’m glad you’re trying and I’m glad that people are still taking notice but what shames me the most is that those that are trying to draw attention to these travesty’s, that account to no less than crimes against humanity as defined and laid down on paper, signed by dignitaries and representatives from every country, state and organization on the planet are not held responsible for their in-actions when presented with such catastrophes of human negligence as famine and preventable disease.
What shames me more than this is that those who are trying to bring the attention of famine and disease of the world do not, are not, will not and refuse to bring this attention to those that are accountable for it; Those with the power to act, prevent and abolish poverty and disease in the worst parts of the world do not, are not, will not and refuse to act.
What shames me more than this is that those in the positions of power to act, prevent and abolish poverty and disease in the worst parts of the world will not concede to admit what their reasons are for this lack of action, this ignorence, this neglegence of duty, this horrifying condemnation of the poorest and most desperate people on the planet.
What shames me more than this is that those that are trying to bring to the attention of famine and disease in the poorest and most desperate places of the planet to the attention of those in the positions of power across every country on the planet to act, prevent and abolish poverty and disease from these poor and desperate places do not, are not, will not and refuse to explain why those people in the positions of power across the world to act, prevent and abolish famine and poverty in the poorest and most desperate places in the world do not, are not, will not and refuse to do so.
I will. I volunteer myself to tell you that which you already know; that which everyone already knows and that which the campaigners for ONE, every other charity on the planet and every person in a position of power to stop preventable famine and disease will not. Why? Banks, that’s why.
05/10/2011 at 2:31 pm
Why dont you donate yourself ? Everyone in this video could have helped before that dreadful number escalated to 30.000 children. Instead of making a catchy “you need to donate” video, open your check books and help them out, if you really care so much.
this world would be better of without sorry ass capitalist assholes that are “teaching” the world how to be generous. GO FUCK YOURSELF S !
DONATE YOUR FACEBOOK STOCK TO THIS ORG IF YOU HAVE A HEART, SCHMUCK.

It is so very sad and frustrating to know the suffering of these people and I admire the wealthy, famous people who genuinely care. They, not the government, with all its red tape, will be able to bring assistance to this issue. I am neither wealthy nor famous, but I will do what I can to get the word out.
05/10/2011 at 3:46 pm
I think its great there is growing awareness about whats happening in Somalia, however I’m critical of the ‘we know what needs to be done’ line used in the video. Famines are socially orchestrated and its refreshing to hear a mainstream advocacy group enunciate this, however I feel that some of the ‘solutions’ being put forward by this website are those which directly contribute and cause famine (eg. trade and economic growth). Im left with this feeling of what will change? There seems to be this reproduction of development agendas and so far I think the problem is we havent got the point.
05/10/2011 at 5:23 pm
It is outrageous. Makes me feel trully impotent, not even signing 200 petitions would make me feel better, I’d like to take them some food myself… but that would not be enough. there has to be something else that has a greater impact, anyway all this effort is very important!
05/10/2011 at 6:58 pm
In fact Victoria, if there were an organized campaign to personally take and hand directly to a person in Somalia, say, a gift basket each, of this (currently) 223,491 people that ‘like’ ONE then even if a tenth of that number came through there would be enough food to save tens of thousands of lives and enough of a movement to change government policy…
06/10/2011 at 12:51 am
Famine, hunger Poverty is in every country. I just learned there are 70 million poor children struggling for food in the USA. Instead of bail out packages lining the pockets of the rich, those rich should be lining the pockets of the poor. Hunger is a human problem with a human solution. I am so sick of watching reality shows of rich people, there are more important things in life. The reality show people should be donating their money. Do you really need that much?
06/10/2011 at 1:56 am
I continue to feel conflicted about aid to Somalia and the reason is that I don’t want in any way to fuel a culture that systematically abuses young women and girls by cutting off their clitorises and sewing their labia together. Spending half an hour to urinate drop by drop, urinary tract infections, pelvic inflammatory disease, painful intercourse, robbed of the ability to experience sexual pleasure. The last I read 90 percent of women are subjected to this life long physical pain and disfigurement. Its is so revolting to me. I shudder thinking of saving a child just so that child can go on to be abused in this way. Famine is man made and so is female genital mutilation. I hope that One can also help enlighten the people of Somalia so that they will stop abusing woman and girls in this manner.
06/10/2011 at 12:45 pm
poverty is really sad. it shouldn’t happen because there is lots of food for every one around the world.
06/10/2011 at 12:56 pm
The Project one is a very good project. I like the way they help the people in Africa without donations. It’s amazing what people are able to do if they just want it.

Hi Mr.Paul David Hewson
THANK YOU for WALK ON, thank you for ONE and ONE.ORG THANK YOU …
Claudia.
Walk On Mr. Bono in the name of justice and LOVE. by Claudia.

¿COUNTRIES ARE YOU READY TO HELP?
Also please ¿can you people stop overrating artists as i see some of you do? using them for this campaings makes me sick! Stop Hipocrisy!! BONO YOU SUCK!!

Hello,
I’ve been reading a lot of magazine articles abouut agriculture, livestock, natural products, ancient writings of nutrition and medicine plants,
And although the biggest problem is the greed of mankind, the planet can still be saved, and saved us, many plants do not even need to be planted, as the chaya of yucatan mexico, high protein, doctors ancient Maya used it mainly for “cure weakness. “Jose Diaz Bolio (1906-1998), known Maya science teacher, in his article devoted to this plant ethnobotany, said that, when combined with corn and pumpkin seed-called “ziquil” – leads to a outstanding food, which will ensure the survival of human beings for a long time. One example of many plants that are already, do not need to be cultivated and no need look any further cutting down trees to grow.
You just need to want, a hamburger does not remove the famine, nutrition and education do.
Hola,

Famino it´s not a problem just of Africa, many comunities over the world have this problem, The develompment wordl, with “all our cience and tecnology” take the knowege, take away all their traditions and customs, are forbidden to eat what they used to, because as we already plundered most, now if we are concerned that these resources are exhausted.
Here in Jalisco Mexico, the native people ate turtle and deer, but civilization arrived, as always started We buy a lot, so people did not hunt to eat and we changed their crops and land, for a aspitinas and vitamins,
08/10/2011 at 7:22 pm
Africa is a problem of history, and for centuries, always treat people and the planet’s resources as a mercandice, without respect and consecuence is that, not only in Africa, it´s also for many other places.
we can stop this by changing our attitude.
Africa deserves it, the rest of the planet deserves it, we can begin to change.
08/10/2011 at 10:37 pm
You’ve made a major PR blunder picking a known tax avoider to front this campaign.
The UK contributes billions to foreign aid and Bono has made sure he isn’t paying his share.
Also you’ve left out the two biggest issues relevant to famine – contraception and corrupt governments.
12/10/2011 at 9:36 pm
We need to get off our bums and do something or it will never be done!! poverty is ridiculous vwe need to help or something!!
20/10/2011 at 10:53 am
I personally think that it is a good thing that big stars are coming out and talking about this issue. If stars like Bono didn’t help out it wouldn’t have been as well ‘advertised’ to people. I think more people with a lot of power should help out with these sort of issues. What all people have done to help the poorer countries is amazing so do not be mean to them.
24/10/2011 at 2:16 pm
“Every generation gets a chance to change the world…
28/10/2011 at 1:46 am
I think this word should be spread around the schools! Although it may seem like teens these days don’t care, but we actually do! I’m willing to help! I’ll spread around to my teachers to tell the other students. If you know any kids, preferably teens, you adults should tell them about it. And you have even more reason if you’re a teacher!
22/11/2011 at 7:37 am
True that famine can’t be stop immediately, but if we start now we can change it. By the way, we should get Chef Gordon Ramsay on that video! XD
26/11/2011 at 9:03 am
Mi raccomando sicuramente questo ai miei amici
