Primary health care in Ethiopia

Dr Gebreab Barnabas, Head of the Regional Health Bureau in Tigray province, talked to ONE recently about a primary health care programme that has been running in Ethiopia.

The scheme, which started 5 years ago, involves the training 30,000 female health extension workers nationally, including 1,800 in Tigray. Supported by the Ethiopian government, the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria, UNICEF and other partners, it also involves the building of more than 3000 heath centres.

Programmes such as this help put health care in the hands of the local community. Not only is primary health care less costly, but its impact can be huge. By eliminating the risk of the disease it helps reduce the costs of diagnosis, treatment and follow up.

Hear what Dr Barnabas had to say:

    Very encouraging.

The only disappointment is that I can’t see the video, so not able to hear Dr Barnabas.

My dear ONE colleagues, please be considerate when doing the international version of ONE.org.

I can’t get your video since your video is from Youtube.com and fundamentally because my Chinese government shields it. So does Twitter, facebook, etc. My government has some reason to do this, while it is too aggressive and make others easy to relate this again to human right. Well, I agree this is sort of undermining my right, but I am not talking about my defination to it in all cases, mostly, I think it’s justice.

If you can put the video on our local youtube, something like Youku.com, then you will benefit all the ONE supporter in China. I don’t know how many people stand with me together in China, and felt sort of lonely.

    Thanks

I have just returned from a year in Ethiopia. I was working to improve health care.
I am campaigning right now to end FGM around the world.
A friend is a finalist on YouTube competition to go to Davos, Switzerland and talk to World Leaders about ending FGM.
SUPPORT US NOW. http://www.youtube.com/Davos let’s end FGM.

It is a problem in Ethiopia and tests the limited health care there is, girls and women can suffer side effects for life. Let’s help prevent it.

    Many Thanks
    Bridget
