We were super excited to receive an update from UK ONE member Jason Lyndon in Sutton Coldfield. Jason is one of many members in the UK who is taking our thought books to their new MPs to help get the word out that overseas aid is a great investment, and to thank the UK government for protecting it in the recent budget.

Jason said:

I had an upbeat and interesting meeting with Mr Richard Shepherd, MP for Aldridge-Brownhills. I presented my local MP with the ONE Thought book. We discussed the Millennium Development Goals and also the impact of climate change on the poorest countries. I also drew Mr Shepherds attention to the ONE Baby Protest to ensure no child is born with HIV by 2015.

Mr Shepherd made the point that, despite once being told that as an MP he should have an opinion on everything, he cannot have an informed opinion on everything on his own, and so must listen to the evidence provided by scientists and experts on issues like climate change.

I also brought up the issue of transparency regarding corporate trade and the mining of resources in developing countries, and we discussed the fact that if no country leads the way on transparency then the risk is it will not happen.

Mr Shepherd thanked ONE for the Thought Book, and recalled our previous correspondence during the ONE Vote 2010 campaign and wished us well.

If you would like to deliver a thought book, get in touch! And if you have a thought book sitting in a dusty corner – get out there, meet your MP and let us know how it went!!
