Eloise and Danish Development Minister Ulla Tørnæs
ONE’s Eloise Todd (right) hands over our Copenhagen petition to Danish Development Minister Ulla Tørnæs.

As the Copenhagen climate change talks continue the issue of ‘additionality’ is becoming ever more important here. Developing countries, including those in Africa, are increasingly worried that development aid is simply being re-allocated to spend on adapting to the dangerious effects of climate change.

Yesterday I was lucky to meet Danish Development Minister Ulla Tørnæs and I handed over our petition calling on world leaders to stop this dangerous double counting. She promised to pass the petition onto Danish Prime Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen, who as host of the Copenhagen talks, is one of the people best placed to make this happen.

We’ll also be handing the petition to the US delegation later this week.

A big, big thank you to the more than 80,000 of you who have now signed the petition. With your help we’re really helping raise awareness of this critical issue.

World leaders are now beginning to arrive here in Copenhagen and the pace of negotiations is heating up. We’ll be closely following developments throughout the rest of week to see what happens.

Eloise

P.S. To find out more about the issue of additionality and why it is so important check out the post from ONE’s Jo Powell who looks into it in more detail.

i’m honestly very relieved to hear this news. From the day i discovered a petition for climate change’s actions in COP on One, i spent time sending messages about this to acquaintances for them to sign in. However, that’s not important now that it comes to actually making serious acts. Hope they ‘ll do well.

Well done! Is there still a possibility to signt that or a similar petition?

Of course climate change is a serious topic, but so is poverty and economical justice in the world

    Martina

I am from Germany, but have been living 7 years in a poor country, in Peru, working and doing my best there in NGO-Projects (some of them initiated by ourselves) against poverty, lack of health and education.
And have lived in own flesh natural and economical desasters like eartquake, hyperinflation, hunger, diseases.

Dr. Siddharta, it is not only about rich ones helping the poor but stop exploitation of poorer countries and their people, it is also a question of justice.

Well done Eloise. I live here in Copenhagen and I happen to know that the decision maker in this sort of thing is the minister of foreign affairs, Mr. Per Stig Møller, a conservative member of the government. He is the senior menister in this area.

    Thank you

We tried our best to be heared and the cry is even louder, we will not tire but keep on knocking on the doors of those who hold the key to Climate change Adaptation and Mitigations’ best deal for all of us, most especially the Developing countries.

The descent into desperate last minute horse trading in Copenhagen demonstrated clearly the need to change the nature of the conversation. How do we move this on from being a negotiation beteween the rich and poor nations into agreement on what is required to avert the crisis and action to achieve this?

With many intrested, I read the comments.
I agree that rich people have to help the poor.
But I do question the role of governments in corruption.
I can not help feeling that withdrawal, see elections in Afganistan, Iraq,Iran Russia, Venezuela and a lot of African countries, the money made available by the “rich” countries, is used for its intended purpose.
Why India has to have their own space program. Collboration with Nasa and Esa on equivalant basis might well as well have done.
The world has become much smaller and no longer modern countries colonize.

Jan, not only the rich countries have to help the poor, but one step further: The rich countries have to accept and agree conditions that give the poorer countries the chance to help themselves and to develop up to the level of the industrial countries. And the first step would be equal voice and votes in summits like the one in Copenhagen of the G8, G20 summits etc.

A bit off topic: I am very happy that I have joined ONE and find it very very positive and interesting to exchange thoughts and ideas here with you guys and people from all over the world with the aim to open new perspectives and paths for one world. I am german, but have been living in Ireland, Tunisia, Peru, Morocco and England and am working and have been working not only in development projects but also as a social worker for migrants from all over the world in my country.
