I’m sure like me you’ve been saddened to see the unprecedented floods in Pakistan, and I’m sure you are keen to find a way to help.

The sheer scale of the disaster is staggering, with reports suggesting that 20 million people have been affected. This is doubly devastating in a country where 60% of the population was already living below the poverty line.

Pakistan will need all its available resources to help it recover from this crippling crisis and to fight long-term poverty. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) – the institution that oversees debt repayments – can play a key role in this. It is currently considering ways in which Pakistan’s debt can be eased, and how to make sure the money is effectively used to help people affected.

Please ask the IMF to freeze Pakistan’s debt repayments for the next 2 years. Sign our petition to Dominique Strauss-Kahn, Managing Director of the IMF.

Petition text:

Please help freeze Pakistan’s debt to ensure the country’s poorest people are able to recover from the devastating floods.

Early this year ONE members helped to get Haiti’s debt cancelled after the earthquake. We can now make a difference for the people of Pakistan giving them the greatest possible help to recover from this devastating disaster.

I have no idea if the One organization accepts donations (I don’t think so… they don’t want our money, just our voice!), but there are many ways you can donate. If you live in the States, Canada, or the UK the easiest way is with your cellphone.

    Americans:

*Text “SWAT” to 50555 to donate $10 to the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR)

*Text “FLOOD” to 27722 to donate $10 to the US State Dept’s Pakistan Relief Fund

*Text “FLOODS”to 864233 to donate $10 to UNICEF

    Canadians:

    *Text “REDCROSS” to 30333 to donate $10 to the Canadian Red Cross;

*Text “GIVE” in English or “DON” in French to 45678 to donate $5 to UNICEF

*Text “WORLD” to 45678 to donate $5 to World Vision Canada

The Canadian government is matching all donations until Sept. 12

    British:

*Text “GIVE” to 70707 to donate 5 pounds.

You could also just do a google search for Unicief, Red Crescent, Islamic Relief, etc and you will most probably see a link on their homepage about how to donate. Hope this helped, and thank you so much for your donations! Every little bit is huge, and every little bit helps.

Thanks for your comments. As Ayesha mentioned at ONE, we aren’t asking for your money, we’re asking for your voice. If you want to make a financial contribution to the relief effort in Pakistan we encourage you to consider one of our partner organizations.

In the UK the Disasters Emergency Committee (www.dec.org) – a group of 13 aid organisations which come together to co-ordinate during major disasters – are appealing for donations. Other organizations such as UNICEF (www.unicef.org), Oxfam (www.oxfam.org), Save the Children (www.savethechildren.net), Muslim Aid (www.muslimaid.org.uk), Islamic Relief (www.islamic-relief.com) and many others are appealing for donations internationally.

Thanks to everyone who has taken action so far, and don’t forget to tell all your friends too.
