Globe and Mail coverIt’s been a whirlwind few days in Toronto with ONE’s Bono and Bob Geldof editing today’s Globe and Mail, Canada’s paper of record, and turning the paper’s focus to Africa just as Canada prepares to host world leaders at the upcoming G8 and G20 summits. Late last night Bob wrapped the last headlines and stories and we made some final adjustments to the cover before it was sent to print. We think the final product is fantastic and hope you do too. The issue examines the question — will the 21st century be the African century? There are op-eds and news stories by and about a wide range of Africans from Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf to Somali rapper K’naan. President Barack Obama responds to questions from Bono about US strategy in Africa. If you’re in Canada get the hard copy too –the red graphic cover is a keeper.

Having Bono and Bob edit the Globe has been a great opportunity for ONE heading into the G8 and G20 meetings in June. The leadership and staff at the Globe, from editor-in-chief John Stackhouse and foreign editor Stephen Northfield to the other editors, reporters, photographers and graphic designers were incredible partners and we’re so grateful that they were willing to take the risk to do something they had never done before.

The Globe and Mail has asked celebrated Kenyan blogger Ory Okolloh to guest edit the globeandmail.com today and over the next month and she will be featuring a great deal of Africa content exclusively through the website including this video of a question submitted by reader Sarah Kibaalya of Toronto in which she asks Bono and Bob if Africans need others to speak on their behalf. Their answers might surprise you. Check it out:

Also check out this live webchat between Bob Geldof and Ory Okolloh which just wrapped up.

We’ll be spotlighting more content throughout the day, so be sure to check back on the ONE Blog for more updates!

I wish a Happy birthday to Paul Hewson. I hope your entire life will be lived with love and love, only love continue to be the reason of your life and acts. I guess that is what we should stand for. Love in our lives and other people´s life. Changing ourselves into better human beings.

Dear Sir Geldolf and Mr. Bono,
I am following what has been written about Africa closely. I even listened to Sir Geldolf on Canada AM this Monday.
Only one tiny article quoting Stephen Lewis of the Stephen Lewis Foundation mentioned the SWAZILAND first International Grandmothers Gathering. which included 40 Canadian Grandmothers and several folks from the foundation.
Is Sir G. not aware of the work of the African Grandmothers: THE UNSUNG HEROES OF AFRICA? Please do inform yourselves about the fact that the African Grandmothers(15 sub-Saharan Countries) are keeping their communities together as well as looking after their orphaned grandchildren. DO GO TO THE
website<www.stephenlewisfoundation.org. and follow the link to the Grandmothers Campaign. Canadian Grandmothers have raised over $7m dollars for the SLF since 2006!!
Take note please we African and Canadian Grandmothers are a force!!

Hats off to the One Campaign for spearheading this special edition of the Globe and Mail. I think development advocates worldwide would like to learn from you what it takes to bring such a major communications initiative to fruition. What does producing a special edition mean? Did the One Campaign pay for this edition of the paper in part or in total? Was the One Campaign responsible for lining up the advertising?

I’m also curious why there was, in the online version anyway, much more emphasis on maternal health — a subject that got it’s own menu title — than on AIDS, the issue that the One Campaign is most closely associated with in terms of global health and health in Africa?

Wow, what a great issue of the Globe and Mail! I didn’t have much time to read it on the May 10th, the date of publication, but I made sure I got a copy to read later. Well, I read it today, on Victoria Day, and I just loved it. It was a really good update on Africa: what has worked well, as well as talking about which areas need our focus, love and help. I immediately used some of the statistics and quotes to write an email to my Member of Parliament to encourage more constructive action. This is good time to write to my MP, as well, since the G20 is meeting here in a few weeks!

Thanks so all for such great work! Sincerely, Heather Jewell from Toronto, Ontario, Canada
