The UK has been a historic leader on development assistance, and now we've got a chance to enshrine that leadership into law.
Gordon Brown recently announced that he will make the UK's commitment on development assistance legally binding. This would be a huge step. It would not only ensure that we deliver on our promises to developing countries it would also allow them to plan better for the future.
In November 2009 ONE members urged Gordon Brown to prioritise legislation that makes the UK's commitment on overseas aid legally binding.
We've reached 54% of our NEW goal of 5,000 signers!
We asked ONE supporters to sign up to our petition to "prioritise legislation that makes the UK's commitment of 0.7% of Gross National Income (GNI) as development assistance by 2013 legally binding".
On 18 November ONE supporters Tamar, Jennifer and I delivered our petition to a friendly policeman who opened the black door of Gordon Brown's house at 10 Downing Street.
Then the Queen, in her speech to open the new parliamentary session, announced, "draft legislation" to do exactly what we asked. So we won!
Thank you to everyone who took part in this action.
