In 2010, Australia directed $368 million (AUD$401 million) in development assistance to sub-Saharan Africa. 12% of Australia’s global increases between 2004 and 2010 were directed to the region.

In December 2010, the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID) released its 2011–15 strategy for Africa, which includes a focus on maternal and child health, water and sanitation, and agriculture and food security.

The Australian government is currently conducting an independent review of development effectiveness to examine AusAID’s current systems, policies and procedures. Expected to be completed by the end of April 2011, the results will help guide the policy direction of Australia’s aid programme.
