Airing Out the “Stinky” Parts of the PEPFAR Bill

January 25th, 2008 at 4:06 pm

Air-Out-Your-Dirty-Laundry Campaign

 Tabling

Over the week following World AIDS Day, Princeton students tabled in their campus center asking students to sign socks. The campaign was part of a larger action to fix the President’s Emergency Relief Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPRFAR) bill which will soon be up for restructuring and reapproval. Rather than take the normal approach to writing letters to Congress, the students joined a campaign to “Air-Out-Your-Dirty-Laundry” on PEPFAR to sign personalized socks outlining which part of the bill you find “stinky.” The action was wildly successful and we quickly ran out of socks after 142 socks had been signed. The socks will now be brought to DC for Congressional visits to make sure all the students’ voices get heard (or their dirty socks get smelt).

ARRRRGH

December 4th, 2007 at 7:47 pm

I just felt like ripping the presidential call-in sheets that I had in my hand into a billion pieces. For the third time in the past week I was hearing from a university staff that our Action Against AIDS table was being moved. ONE Seton Hall had planned a table in coordination with World AIDS Day in our university center for last Friday, but the person who was supposed to fill out the paper work wasn’t in. Then over the weekend all the spaces on Monday became filled, so we were push back one more day. But my campus’s bureaucracy had one more trick up its sleeve, today at 10:30 we were moved from the high traffic space next to the cafe we were promised to the dust settling Living Room, which is really used only by a handful of commuters. So much red tape just to hand out some red ribbons.

However despite Fate’s best efforts our event turned out to be a great success. Word spread through classes (thank you facebook), and every hour there was a good size crowd signing our support banner, pinning each other with ribbons, and phoning into Obama and Thompson to ask them to take a stance on AIDS. Never mind the fire drill that lasted 45mins in the middle of our time slot (standing in 28 degree weather makes you stronger to fight poverty). I am letting out another ARRRGH cause we are the Seton Hall Pirates and we are ONE. Watch out top 10, we are gunning for you.

Last Winner of the Semester

December 3rd, 2007 at 6:51 pm

George Washington University just won the last weekly challenge of the semester (best World AIDS Day event) and snagged 10,000 points. They teamed up with 21 other student organizations to march across Washington, D.C. (using the distinct advantage of being in the capitol) to rally in front of the White House. There they heard from speakers including Eleanor Holmes Norton, D.C.’s non-voting member of Congress.

They beat out several very impressive pool of 56 other events.  Some featured free HIV/AIDS testing, while others kept it simple and simply passed out ribbons and signed up new ONE members.  Whatever your event was, congratulations, you made this an AIDS Day to remember.

The Last Weekly Challenge of the Semester

November 26th, 2007 at 4:07 pm

Weekly ChallengeDecember 1, World AIDS Day, is just around the corner and more than 30 million people are still estimated to be living with HIV/AIDS around the globe. Use the day as it was intended: to raise awareness and to remind those around you that our actions make a real difference in ending this epidemic.

You can see if there is a World AIDS Day event on your campus or register your own event now so that people in your area will know it’s happening and can attend here: http://www.one.org/event/campusdec1/

After the event, send in a summary of your event along with photos and videos using our handy online tool by Sunday, December 2, at Midnight PST. The campus with the best event and/or display scores 10,000 points, but even if you don’t win the challenge you still score 4,000 points for having an event.

Good luck everyone!
