Design Best OCC Shirt for 10,000 points

September 30th, 2008 at 11:59 am

OCCers, your Challenge this week: design your own ONE Campus Shirt.

Submit your entries by midnight on Sunday. Winner gets 10,000 points.  This is the second time we’ve done this challenge and we got some pretty clever/aesthetically pleasing submissions last year. Here’s to hoping for more of the same. Some helpful hints on what we, the judging panel, are looking for:

-Put a large, clear ONE logo somewhere on the shirt. Obviously the point of this Weekly Challenge is to develop a ONE Campus Challenge shirt, so we should know what the shirt is for. Feel free to reference this year’s theme, too!

-Make sure that the writing is visible. The message of a shirt is much more accessible if someone walking past doesn’t need to squint to read it.

-Avoid too much clutter. If you have only three seconds to display your shirt to someone walking past, you want to make sure they understand it!

-Use your U. Incorporate your school’s flair on your design. Minimum 16 pieces…just kidding.

-DON’T use a school logo without appropriate permission. We at ONE encourage lawful t-shirts so let’s try to avoid the copyright issues.

-DON’T use profanity. No one likes an angry garment.

-DON’T endorse a candidate or political party. We’re nonpartisan here and try to give love to both sides of the aisle, or none at all.

We’re only allowing one submission per OCC member, but schools can submit as many designs as desired to increase their probability. Submit your designs here.

FYI – If you’ve already submitted a T-shirt design, you may submit it again for challenge winner consideration, but you will not get the additional 150 “ONE your shirt” action points for any previously-submitted design. And while the limit is one design per member, if you have submitted a design before this week, you may submit a different one for this challenge and get the points as well as challenge winner consideration.

Good luck!

Weekly Challenge #2: Scavenger Hunt!

September 23rd, 2008 at 12:10 pm

occ-challengeweek2-email-us

Details: 10,000 points will go to the school submitting the most different actions from our list of point-getters! You can track your school’s completed actions by clicking here.

Deadline: Sunday, September 28th, 2008, midnight PST.

Here’s a helpful Scavenger Hunt Q&A:

Q. What if I just did an action last week?
A. If you’ve already done an action earlier this year, we’ve already checked it off the list for your school. We don’t want you starting a duplicate Facebook group, or trying to get your school declared “a Campus of ONE” two weeks in a row! However, you will not receive points again for the actions you took before this week, since you already got those points last week. You just get a checkmark towards winning the challenge.

Q. What if an action takes more than a week to complete or verify?
A. Try to avoid time-intensive actions you’re not going to be able to complete and verify by Sunday night. For example, if you write to your Member of Congress, s/he probably won’t get back to you in time. Stick to the actions that are easier to report on. We don’t expect anyone to check off EVERYTHING on the list!

Q. What if somebody else from my school does the same action as me?
A. It only gets checked off your school’s list once, so it only counts towards this challenge once. But you still get regular points for every action you submit, even if somebody else did the same one.

Q. I submitted an action, so why isn’t it checked off on my school’s list?
A. The OCC team has to approve each action before it gets checked off your list. Please be patient, we’re going to be working nearly round-the-clock to get all valid submissions approved as quickly as possible!

Good luck and GAME ON!

University of Michigan Wins First Weekly Challenge!

September 23rd, 2008 at 10:38 am

First ONE meeting

Congrats to the University of Michigan on winning this year’s very first OCC Weekly Challenge! Check out their account of the winning week below:

We held an entire week of OCC Launch events! We kicked off with our first meeting Tuesday evening. We had about 15 attendees which was a great turnout for the short notice we gave them. We gave them an overview of our goals for the year, the activities we want to focus on for the next month, and most importantly the rest of the launch events. Throughout the week, members of our group stood up in their classes and talked about the campaign and passed around Declarations for students to sign. We talked at our student group meetings (student government, dance marathon, etc) and got them to sign up as well. E-mails were sent to all of our friends asking them to sign up.

Then, on Friday morning/afternoon we set up a table in the atrium of a very popular building for classes on campus. We had members from our group wearing ONE gear and talking to students as they walked by, getting them to sign the Declaration and asking who wants to get involved. Students wrote down different groups they are involved in so that we can start networking and collaborating with other groups on campus. Friday night group members attending the Home Volleyball match and sat in “The Zone” (student section) talking to students about ONE and cheering on the team with them.

Finally, on Sunday, we went to the big AIDS Walk-Ann Arbor event that was held on campus. Community members, students, faculty and staff formed teams and walked a 5K to raise money for our HIV/AIDS Resource Center. ONE set up a table with information and went around talking to people about our goals and getting them to sign the declaration. We co-sponsored the event by making a donation to the cause and setting up our table and volunteering with event logistics. It was a great way for our group members to bond and get the word out to the greater Ann Arbor community as well as UofM students.

In total, our launch events helped us sign up almost 450 new members, which surpassed our goal of 400! We have gotten a lot of interest from tons of students and are looking forward to our next meeting on Tuesday!

Weekly Challenge Reporting

What is a Campus Launch?

September 16th, 2008 at 12:08 pm

Every week during OCC we announce a new weekly challenge to give you a chance to score big points for your school.

Our first weekly challenge of the year is to create a launch of OCC on your campus. Below are some different ideas to get your creative juices flowing. Remember to take photos, videos and to keep track of any campus press- because submissions about what you did are due on this reporting page by Sunday, September 21, at midnight PST.

Your Campus Launch can be as simple as recruiting in your dormitory, or just setting up a registration table on school grounds. You can even try to hold a rally or concert to increase OCC visibility on your campus.

You’ll score 100 points for each new sign-up. Your school can rack up 1,000 more points by having one person report on your Campus Launch by submitting photos, videos, press links, etc. at our reporting page. The school registering the most new ONE members by the end of the week (Sunday at midnight) gets 10,000 points plus a goodie-bag filled with T-shirts, wristbands, other ONE merchandise for your team and—new this year—Flip video cameras to help you record your future OCC activities!

  • Tabling: Set up a table in a high traffic area of campus with literature explaining ONE and its issues. Engage people as they walk by and make sure that you have plenty of sign up forms set out to help people sign up with ONE. Read more.
  • Speaker: Try to get a speaker on your campus to talk about topics relevant to ONE. This can be a professor who teaches a class on a similar issue, an author, a faith leader, or a politician. Make sure that you have sign-ups ready as people are entering or exiting the venue for the speaker. This is a great way to tie in the topics that the speaker touches on.
  • Movie screening: Movies relevant to ONE include “Nowhere in Africa” (German film); “The Girl in the Café”;” Yesterday”; “Orphans of Nkandla”; “Born into Brothels”; “Black Gold”; “Blood Diamond”; “Hotel Rwanda”; “God Grew Tired of Us”; and “Invisible Children”, among many, many others.
  • Storm the Dorm: Post informational fliers around a building on campus (with permission from campus administrators, of course!) Or talk with a Resident Advisor to set up a talk with residents in a particular dorm about ONE.
  • Campus Events: Sign up members at sporting events, concerts, outside of classrooms, anywhere on campus!
  • Your campus will get points for participating in the Weekly Challenge, and the winner will receive an extra 10,000 points and a special prize pack! Please report your weekly challenge submission here by Sunday midnight PST.

    Better Than The Rest

    February 19th, 2008 at 11:07 am

Every school that did a competitive entry into the final weekly challenge used phone calls as their weapon of choice for making their voices heard.

And though several schools placed hundreds of calls, UNLV did it the best.

The Rebels gathered together a core group of people of people for a marathon phone bank calling all of their members of Congress on each of ONE’s key pieces of legislation.  With a grand total of 540 phone calls, they have certainly shown that they know who to bring people together to take effective action.

Good luck to UNLV and everyone else as we head into the final round of the competition.

    The Shirts On Our Backs…

    February 13th, 2008 at 11:13 pm

They came bearing gifts. Jamie and Justine, that is. Those who attended the Power 100 will certainly remember them; but they trekked all the way up to Connecticut to Sacred Heart University to deliver our weekly challenge prize. The prize was 100 custom ONE T-shirts that one of our own members designed. The coolest part is that they are all made by Edun Live, the company started by Bono’s wife that makes their shirts from 100% African cotton. In the short time we’ve had the shirts, we’ve been the most stylish poverty fighters on campus and are raising quite a demand for them! Thanks again to ONE for the amazing gift; and we made a special video JUST for Weldon and Erin to say thank you! Huzzah!

Have I Ever Told You How Lucky You Are?

    February 9th, 2008 at 4:55 pm

As University students, the members of the Sacred Heart ONE Campaign have realized one thing; the positive correlation between education and being able to make a difference in the world. So naturally, when the weekly challenge was to integrate ourselves further into the community, we turned to local (very wealthy) Frenchtown Elementary School.

Our target audience consisted of three 2nd grade classes, so we didn’t want to terrify the kids with the over simplified facts that many ONE members are familiar with. So like any intelligent, free thinking individual, we turned to Dr. Seuss for a little assistance. ONE had previously won a poster design contest here at SHU and our prize was a $50 AMEX gift card, so with our “prize money” we bought three copies of “Have I Ever Told You How Lucky You Are?” and a few extra ONE bands.

Ten of our students and staff arrived at the school at about 1:30 on Friday, armed with the books, bands, and a few packets of construction paper. We went into the classes and introduced ourselves, stating that we were with the ONE Campaign, whose goal was to make life a little bit easier for those less fortunate than ourselves. We had a very informative few minutes, asking them how many meals they ate that day, where they were going after school (most said ‘home’), etc. Then we told them that not everyone was as fortunate; some people don’t get to eat every day, let alone 3 full meals. Cue Dr. Seuss. We read and afterwards passed out the construction paper. We asked them to trace their hands, and inside, to write one thing that they learned. A few selections:

I learned not to waste food. – Breanna

I learned to keep the environment clean – Katie

I learned that I am very lucky to have toys to play with. – Zachary

I learned that if you have extra clothes you can give them to the poor – Annie

I learned that I want to help others – Paul

Anyway, after spending a little more time with the kids (who were adorable, mind you) and taking a few more group pictures, we forced ourselves out of the school because we still had more work to do. We have a surprise for them that we’ll be giving them on Monday morning; a giant ONE poster made up of all their hands with the fingers locked together! It was a colossal effort that we pulled off in a very short amount of time; and there is no doubt in our minds that our devotion to the principles of the ONE campaign have sparked a few future-grassroots activists to join in the fight against poverty. Huzzah!!

    Taking It Off Campus

    February 4th, 2008 at 7:53 pm

This week’s challenge is to reach out by doing a project in your local community. While our efforts on campus can make a huge difference, when we expand our reach we amplify our impact with elected officials and in the local media.

Whether you team up with someone from the local community for a lobbying visit, going to your old high school, or tabling at a local hot spot, this is your chance to start expanding your impact.

You can report your efforts using our handy reporting form.

Have fun with this challenge, this really is a chance to do something very different from your normal routine.

    Get Your Learning On

    February 4th, 2008 at 4:54 pm

Kansas State – quietly lurking the teens for a long time now – is about to launch themselves into the top ten with a great educational Power Point detailing the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the ONE’s efforts of fight global poverty. The presentation will net them 50,000 points as the winning entry into last week’s weekly challenge.

We’ve uploaded the presentation so you can check it out an use it on your campus.

All of the other presentations were pretty good, and for spreading awareness on their campuses we gave each school that submitted an educational project 1,000 points.
