New Hampshire Primary: First in the Nation

January 10th, 2008 at 2:40 am

Everyone must have heard by now, but just for the record: Senators Hillary Clinton and John McCain won the New Hampshire primaries last night in the Democratic and Republican primaries.

Fortunately, thanks to the hard work of many in the Granite State, other early primary states, and (a big deal was made of this at the Power 100 Summit) ONE Campus Challenge participants who made calls to the campaigns, both Sen. Clinton and Sen. McCain have gone on the record at http://www.onevote08.org/ontherecord/

Sen. McCain has been featured on the other (original) ONE blog numerous times, making a habit of letting ONE advertise at his campaign events by handing over the microphone for a few minutes for ONE volunteers to explain our cause.

Sen Clinton has developed a comprehensive plan for development, one of only two candidates that I know of to do so, which available on her website at: http://www.hillaryclinton.com/news/release/view/?id=4437

ONE to one Nevada

January 9th, 2008 at 3:42 pm

On January 19, the first ever Nevada Caucus will shape the race to the White House. As such, it is our chance to push the candidates to make ever stronger commitments to fight poverty, and educate everyone on the commitments they have already made.

With over 12,000 members in Nevada there are plenty of caucus goers who already know about the presidential candidates going On the Record against poverty.  But for each ONE member, there are dozens more who are unaware of the plight of the world’s poorest people and what the presidential candidates are planning on doing to help.

This is where you come in.  You can help by writing a letter a letter to a likely Nevada Caucus goer and tell them about extreme poverty, ONE, and what the candidates plan to do to fight poverty.

Since there are more caucus goers than ONE members writing letters, we’ll send a select few of the best letters to several thousand caucus goers, so please take a minute to put together a very compelling message.  After all, no ones is better equipped to convince a likely caucus goer than you.

Power 100 Summit: Josh Lozman

January 4th, 2008 at 4:07 pm

Josh Lozman is the ONE Vote ‘08 Policy Manager so it’s very natural that he would be a part of the Power 100 Summit and speak to the nation’s leading activists [ :-P ] about what’s going on in the upcoming elections and how ONE is getting its questions out there. The ONE Vote ‘08 campaign is dedicated to this purpose. It has launched a very successful project to get presidential candidates from both parties to deliberately outline their plans on issues such as foreign aid, debt cancelation – and everything that ONE is concerned with. Lozman gave all the students a handout that outlined this project, “On the Record,” and its successes. Over 10 presidential candidates have gone on the record for ONE. You can look at these records and even compare candidates side by side at www.onevote08.com

Josh Lozman also talked about the Iowa caucus that happened the night before. He had been there and flew to the Power 100 Summit (very early) to share his experiences. He shared a picture slide show and discussed the very apparent presence of ONE members at this important political event.

Pres Bill Clinton visits Iowa State

December 22nd, 2007 at 3:08 am

The caucuses are fast approaching in Iowa and that means you never know who will show up on campus. On the Monday of finals week, I finished my first exam and headed across campus with some friends to see what former President Bill Clinton had to say to the residents of Ames, IA. We got seats right up in the front row.

Due to the weather, the President was about an hour late arriving for the talk, but it was worth the wait. He spoke positively about all of the democratic presidential candidates and why he supports Hillary as an “agent of change.”

After his hour-long address, he shook hands with the crowd. I thanked him for the work he’s done to supply malaria drugs to those in need and handed him a ONE band. Then President Clinton paused, turned and told me about how he’d just had a meeting with Bono a few days earlier before and continued shaking hands as he held the ONE band.

What Candidates Say About Us

One heck of a video of some of the presidential candidates talking about ONE and the ONE Vote ‘08 initiative.

Rep. Ron Paul at College of Charleston

November 29th, 2007 at 8:24 pm

Tuesday, November 27th, College of Charleston in Charleston, SC hosted Representative Ron Paul on campus for our Bully Pulpit series. “The Bully Pulpit: Reflections on Presidential Communication” is a series hosted by the College of Charleston and its Department of Communication that welcomes presidential candidates from the two major political parties to the College of Charleston campus to discuss the importance of presidential communication. The video of Dr. Paul can be found at cofc.edu/bullypulpit .

After the event, I met with Dr. Paul to discuss the issues of extreme poverty around the world. I told him about the ONE Campaign and our efforts to end extreme poverty and fight the global AIDS pandemic. He said he supported humanitarian aid if the money were available.

Who You Gonna Call?

November 28th, 2007 at 2:44 pm

make callFor the last few weeks we have been turning on the heat for the presidential candidates to tell us exactly what, if elected, they would do fight extreme poverty and global disease.

So far this “On the Record” campaign has been stunningly successful as we’ve delivered more that 55,000 petition signatures to each of the campaigns. But if we’re going to get all of the presidential candidates to take this challenge and make the On the Record campaign a success, we need to go all out. It’s phone call time.

To make a call:

  1. Go to ONE.org/OnTheRecordCalls/
  2. Use the drop down menu to look up candidate’s numbers.
  3. Use the talking points to help you with your call.
  4. Fill out the form and check off each candidate you called.

It should take about 30 minutes to call all 15 candidates, and at 1,000 points a call, that good for 15,000 points for just half an hour of work.

This is a huge chance to make a real difference in the fight against poverty. If we can get the candidates to make commitments to fighting poverty now, before the primaries and caucuses, we stand a good chance of our next president being dedicated to our cause.

Take Action: Make Them Go “On The Record”

November 8th, 2007 at 4:11 pm

ONE Vote 08’s core mission is to make global poverty and diseases priorities in the 2008 election, and yet global poverty wasn’t even mentioned once in the last two presidential debates. It’s time that we step up our game.

OnTheRecordRight now, ONE members are urging every man and woman running for president to tell us, in writing, where they stand and what plans they have for:

  • Eradicating malaria;
  • Improving child and maternal health;
  • Reversing the spread of HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis;
  • Achieving universal primary education; and
  • Providing access to food and clean water for all.

At the same time, we’re asking all the candidates to speak on camera to ONE members about these commitments.

Please sign the petition and ask your friends and family to sign as well.

To increase the impact of this campaign, we’ll be placing newspaper ads in the four critical early primary states asking the candidates to tell us where they stand – and in those ads we’ll let the candidates know just how many ONE Campaign members have already signed the petition.

We are only a few weeks away from the start of the primary elections and the actions we take now could matter even more than they do on Election Day 2008.

Please sign ONE’s “On The Record” petition today.
