Well, we couldn’t just NOT open up the opportunity for a few more students to participate in our 2nd Annual Power 100 Summit February 6-9, refusing them access to our amazing speakers, workshops with ONE staff, and the ability to network with 100 of the most active student advocates on extreme poverty in the country.
If you’re chosen, you’ll be asked to pay for your travel to DC and ONE will front the rest of the bill.
Apply here.

If you haven’t already, make sure you sign ONE’s petition to President-elect Barack Obama, asking him for a strong statement on global poverty in his inaugural address – and send the link to your friends and family, too. It’s worth 500 OCC points per signature!
Click here to read the petition and add your signature.
Millions of people around the world are going to tune in for Obama’s first speech as President. We want to make sure ONE’s issues are in the spotlight. Right now, we’re just shy of our goal of 100,000 signatures before the inauguration on Tuesday. So help us out and earn some easy points by signing the petition.

Kaytee Lozier writes!
My name is Kaytee Lozier and I’m the COA for New York. I’m a senior at Hofstra University hoping to work for ONE someday and possible manage events for non-profit organizations. I’m majoring in Print Journalism and I work at Chili’s on the weekends as a waitress. I enjoy tennis, puppies, and High School Musical (I’ve accepted it, you should too).
I’ve learned so much in my two semesters interning for ONE and I’m really proud of how far the One Campus Challenge has come in such a short time. If you haven’t been to the Power 100 Summit before, get ready to be as inspired as I am. It’s so great to see everyone come together and work toward our final goal. My personal goal for the Power 100 Summit is to learn as much as possible and bring the information and motivation back to my campus. Together we can brainstorm some new and innovative ways to spread our message and get even more people on board! I look forward to reuniting with friends from last year’s Summit and meeting the newcomers.

Carol!!
I spent some time thinking about how to spice up my biography – but I couldn’t really think of anything. Go figure, I’m Indian and I don’t know spice. I first got interested in Human Rights when I visited an orphanage on a trip to India. And after that I pursued my interests having human rights in the back of my mind – eventually I changed my major and pursued an education surrounding the issue itself. We’ll see where that takes me but right now it’s brought me here.
really like being the Campus Outreach Ambassador for Pennsylvania – the state I go to school in! Go Drexel! But having served as an intern for ONE the past year as well I’m really enjoying the benefits and the challenges and really had fun meeting campus leaders from across the nation including some really awesome people and sharing the experience of amazing speakers with them.
Being informed, getting educated on current events and historic ones was actually fun. So, I’m really looking forward to this Summit and I hope I’m only building hype for the event, trust me – you want to be there!

New Year’s Recruitment Challenge
Details: 20,000 points to the school with the most new recruits over a 2 week period.
Deadline: Midnight PST on Sunday, January 25th, 2009
Your first mission for the new semester is to expand your ranks. We want you to have the best possible team to compete for top ten honors, as well as give you a strong base for next year’s competition. And we’re also looking to award special prizes to the individual students who do the best recruiting and take the most individual actions.
There are lots of ways you can bring new members into your OCC chapter. Here are a few suggestions from the OCC team.
1. Perhaps the easiest thing is to recruit people you already know. Try sending an email to your family and friends, like this one:
“Dear friend,
I wanted to let you know I’m taking part in the 2009 ONE Campus Challenge, a friendly competition between Universities to see which can do the most to raise awareness about global poverty and preventable diseases. Since I know you care about these issues, I wanted to invite you to help my school earn points. Just go to www.one.org/campus to sign up, and be sure to select my school. Thank you!”
2. You can set up a table on your campus and ask people to sign up, using our handy tabling tool. Get some handy tips on tabling here.
3. Use Facebook. You can post a note and tag your friends in it, or even put a link to the signup page as your status update. You can also post comments on campus group pages.
4. Use your campus resources. Post fliers on bulletin boards, both real ones and cyber ones. Most schools have message boards or student exchanges where you might be able to post something, and try targeting particular clubs and departments that might be interested in ONE issues.
5. Hold an event. If you show a film, have a meeting, host a speaker or panel, or even piggy-back on another group’s event, this can be a great way to get new people interested.
Of course, we don’t want you spamming strangers, submitting false email addresses (and don’t think we can’t tell if you do!), or generally making a pest of yourself. But within the bounds of good sportsmanship, feel free to get creative and do whatever it takes to bring in those members.
You have two weeks. Good luck!

ONE- Baylor recently had an opportunity to band a celebrity when he visited the university. Lieutenant Andy Baldwin, MD, most known for being ‘The Bachelor’ on ABC’s TV program, was happy to wear a band in support of ONE. Lt Baldwin is a Navy physician and earned the Humanitarian of the Year award from Triathlete and Competitor magazines for his participation on a military mission in Laos, where he treated more than 600 Laotians in remote mountain villages.
As the ONE Campus Challenge heats up, Baylor University has been working hard to spread ONE’s message in the fight against extreme poverty. From helping out in our community to snapping some great pictures along the way we had a great 2008 and looking forward to an even better 2009!

The gang at Webster University in St. Louis takes their second Photo of the Week win with this great shot from a recent team meeting. Webster raked in a whopping 4,500 points over the holidays, making them 15th place overall and strong contenders for the Top 10. Keep it up, Webster!

2008 started off strong for the ONE Campus Challenge, with our first-ever Power 100 Summit bringing together the top 100 OCC student leaders of 2007-8. At the Summit, students heard from leaders in the global anti-poverty movement including Steve Radelet and Gene Sperling, and influential members of Congress including Former Senate Majority leader Bill Frist and Democratic strategist Paul Begala. And students held their own workshops and forums, working together to hone their advocacy skills.
In April, the top 10 schools received $1,000 each towards creating anti-poverty programs on their campuses. At the end of the school year, Western Kentucky University emerged as our 2007-8 OCC champion with a dramatic day of anti-poverty events. They signed 1,745 new members, wrote 300 letters to legislators, and declared WKU a Campus of ONE and Bowling Green, Kentucky a City of ONE. All in ONE day.
The 2008-9 school year has really kept the momentum going. We’ve had 10 challenges over three months, including two “Super Challenges” each spanning two weeks. Here’s a recap of all our challenges and winners:
Challenge 1: Campus Launch

Challenge 8: ONE Story/Book

So far during the second OCC season, we’ve amassed more than 27,000 participants representing 2,548 different schools, and the PR News Nonprofit Awards recognized OCC as one of the top advocacy campaigns in the country for 2008.
Congratulations to all OCC participants for a great year! Let’s make 2009 even better.
