Design Best OCC Shirt for 10,000 points

September 30th, 2008 at 11:59 am

OCCers, your Challenge this week: design your own ONE Campus Shirt.

Submit your entries by midnight on Sunday. Winner gets 10,000 points.  This is the second time we’ve done this challenge and we got some pretty clever/aesthetically pleasing submissions last year. Here’s to hoping for more of the same. Some helpful hints on what we, the judging panel, are looking for:

-Put a large, clear ONE logo somewhere on the shirt. Obviously the point of this Weekly Challenge is to develop a ONE Campus Challenge shirt, so we should know what the shirt is for. Feel free to reference this year’s theme, too!

-Make sure that the writing is visible. The message of a shirt is much more accessible if someone walking past doesn’t need to squint to read it.

-Avoid too much clutter. If you have only three seconds to display your shirt to someone walking past, you want to make sure they understand it!

-Use your U. Incorporate your school’s flair on your design. Minimum 16 pieces…just kidding.

-DON’T use a school logo without appropriate permission. We at ONE encourage lawful t-shirts so let’s try to avoid the copyright issues.

-DON’T use profanity. No one likes an angry garment.

-DON’T endorse a candidate or political party. We’re nonpartisan here and try to give love to both sides of the aisle, or none at all.

We’re only allowing one submission per OCC member, but schools can submit as many designs as desired to increase their probability. Submit your designs here.

FYI – If you’ve already submitted a T-shirt design, you may submit it again for challenge winner consideration, but you will not get the additional 150 “ONE your shirt” action points for any previously-submitted design. And while the limit is one design per member, if you have submitted a design before this week, you may submit a different one for this challenge and get the points as well as challenge winner consideration.

Good luck!

This week’s Photo of the Week Competition goes to the University of Florida. This picture was taken following their first ONE-UF meeting of the year. (Note the impressive attendance rate!)

You can bank on the Gators not taking this year’s OCC sitting down. They’ve also been known to incorporate the “Gator Chomp” (to take a bite out of poverty?) into their repertoire.

Speaking of reptiles…

ONE Perspective on Latin America

September 25th, 2008 at 4:14 pm

With the United Nations Special Summit on the Millennium Development Goals going on this week, it may not be a surprise to say a group of world leaders were gathered in New York City. Yet, they were miles from the UN headquarters. In fact, these heads of state gathered at The Earth Institute at Columbia University for a forum on The Children of Latin America: A Future Without Poverty.

Those in attendance from the Latin American nations were Felipe de Jesús Calderón Hinojosa, President, United Mexican States, Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, President, Argentine Republic, Fernando Armindo Lugo Méndez, President, Republic of Paraguay, Elias Antonio Saca González, President, Republic of El Salvador, and Martín Erasto Torrijos Espino, President, Republic of Panama.

At that, Bono isn’t the only rock-star philanthropist taking aim at eliminating poverty. Shakira and Alejandro Sanz graced the floor with their presence along with Jeffrey Sachs, bestselling author and director of the Earth Institute, and activists from the ALAS and Inter-American Development Bank.

So naturally, when student leaders at Sacred Heart University, Emerson College, and Seton Hall University found out about it, we knew we had to be there to represent ONE. After convincing our professors to let us skip class, we traveled from Connecticut, Massachusetts, and New Jersey with ONE bracelets and shirts proudly displayed.

While we loved seeing Shakira and Jeff Sachs, the truly meaningful words spoken at the forum were those of the world leaders. From stating how they themselves focus on the MDG’s to more personal stories, such as the state of emergency in Paraguay to the sacrifice of “beautiful buildings to have happier citizens”, much was shared, and likewise much was learned. Truly, other world leaders aren’t turning a deaf ear to these problems.

Mr. Sachs joked between Shakira’s monologue that “Like Wyclef Jean said, she makes a man want to speak Spanish.” Well, even if you don’t speak Spanish, you can watch a bilingual archived webcast of the thrilling forum available online!

ONE Bus Visits George Washington University

September 24th, 2008 at 2:26 pm

The ONE bus rolled onto the campus of George Washington University on a crisp morning last Thursday, September 18th. With the bus parked on a highly trafficked street between GW dormitories and the Lerner Auditorium, a day of recruiting for the ONE Campaign began!

The GW ONE campus chapter was out in full force, supplying energetic volunteers and free pizza to entice passersby to step up to the table. Students handed out wristbands, water bottles, and leaflets encouraging people to join ONE in fighting to make global poverty a top priority in the upcoming election. From GW students and faculty, to campus police and local coffee vendors, the response was huge. Nearly 600 people signed the ONE Declaration and put on a white wristband for the first time!

This picture of the week has the Wright stuff!

September 24th, 2008 at 9:54 am

Wright State University takes the first Photo of the Week competition! They used the ONE Campus Challenge as the focus for their annual “Freshmen Plunge,” a service activity that kicked off the year for all incoming students.

Along with this great shot of 200+ students AND their mascot ONE-ed out and forming a human ONE logo, WSU also signed up a ton of new members, hosted a letter-writing campaign to Senator Voinovich of Ohio, and visited local student and community organizations dedicated to the fight against extreme poverty and global disease.

We had some really great submissions for Photo of the Week this week, but let’s be honest – this is a pretty stellar engagement of the Class of 2012.

Congrats WSU! And to all you other Campus Challengers, keep the cameras clicking!

Weekly Challenge #2: Scavenger Hunt!

September 23rd, 2008 at 12:10 pm

occ-challengeweek2-email-us

Details: 10,000 points will go to the school submitting the most different actions from our list of point-getters! You can track your school’s completed actions by clicking here.

Deadline: Sunday, September 28th, 2008, midnight PST.

Here’s a helpful Scavenger Hunt Q&A:

Q. What if I just did an action last week?
A. If you’ve already done an action earlier this year, we’ve already checked it off the list for your school. We don’t want you starting a duplicate Facebook group, or trying to get your school declared “a Campus of ONE” two weeks in a row! However, you will not receive points again for the actions you took before this week, since you already got those points last week. You just get a checkmark towards winning the challenge.

Q. What if an action takes more than a week to complete or verify?
A. Try to avoid time-intensive actions you’re not going to be able to complete and verify by Sunday night. For example, if you write to your Member of Congress, s/he probably won’t get back to you in time. Stick to the actions that are easier to report on. We don’t expect anyone to check off EVERYTHING on the list!

Q. What if somebody else from my school does the same action as me?
A. It only gets checked off your school’s list once, so it only counts towards this challenge once. But you still get regular points for every action you submit, even if somebody else did the same one.

Q. I submitted an action, so why isn’t it checked off on my school’s list?
A. The OCC team has to approve each action before it gets checked off your list. Please be patient, we’re going to be working nearly round-the-clock to get all valid submissions approved as quickly as possible!

Good luck and GAME ON!

University of Michigan Wins First Weekly Challenge!

September 23rd, 2008 at 10:38 am

First ONE meeting

Congrats to the University of Michigan on winning this year’s very first OCC Weekly Challenge! Check out their account of the winning week below:

We held an entire week of OCC Launch events! We kicked off with our first meeting Tuesday evening. We had about 15 attendees which was a great turnout for the short notice we gave them. We gave them an overview of our goals for the year, the activities we want to focus on for the next month, and most importantly the rest of the launch events. Throughout the week, members of our group stood up in their classes and talked about the campaign and passed around Declarations for students to sign. We talked at our student group meetings (student government, dance marathon, etc) and got them to sign up as well. E-mails were sent to all of our friends asking them to sign up.

Then, on Friday morning/afternoon we set up a table in the atrium of a very popular building for classes on campus. We had members from our group wearing ONE gear and talking to students as they walked by, getting them to sign the Declaration and asking who wants to get involved. Students wrote down different groups they are involved in so that we can start networking and collaborating with other groups on campus. Friday night group members attending the Home Volleyball match and sat in “The Zone” (student section) talking to students about ONE and cheering on the team with them.

Finally, on Sunday, we went to the big AIDS Walk-Ann Arbor event that was held on campus. Community members, students, faculty and staff formed teams and walked a 5K to raise money for our HIV/AIDS Resource Center. ONE set up a table with information and went around talking to people about our goals and getting them to sign the declaration. We co-sponsored the event by making a donation to the cause and setting up our table and volunteering with event logistics. It was a great way for our group members to bond and get the word out to the greater Ann Arbor community as well as UofM students.

In total, our launch events helped us sign up almost 450 new members, which surpassed our goal of 400! We have gotten a lot of interest from tons of students and are looking forward to our next meeting on Tuesday!

Bono on this week’s United Nation’s MDG Summit

September 22nd, 2008 at 12:33 pm

All this week, Bono and Jeffrey Sachs will be blogging for the Financial Times from the United Nation’s summit on the Millennium Development Goals.

As a precursor, the Financial Times conducted a Q & A with Bono. An excerpt is below, and the full piece is at FT.com.

AB: What is this week [and the Millennium Development Goals summit] all about?

Bono: Most of us woke up on New Year’s Day 2000 with a hangover and a hazy memory of a night of pleasant fanfare and dumb parade. However, the new millennium was also celebrated by our commitment to eight goals that would change the planet and demonstrate to the developing world how we might, through a combination of know-how and resources, partner with them in efforts to help millions out of desperate poverty. We gave ourselves 15 years, we’re halfway there. How do we measure up?

AB: What are the two or three goals you want to achieve this week?

Bono: 1. Blogging for the FT, being your roving reporter in the canyons of Manhattan. While the world upends on Wall Street, I’ll be mostly midtown at the UN and the Clinton Global Initiative talking about the resilience of the world’s poor while the world’s rich find out how fragile life can be.

2. Unlock €1bn of unspent European Union Common Agricultural Policy money. This year our farmers don’t qualify for it, food prices are high. African farmers desperately need it.

3. Show what’s working as well as what’s not. Bad news about Africa travels much farther than good news. There will be a historic and innovative announcement on malaria on Thursday – watch out for it. Thanks to debt relief, aid and African leadership, 29m more children are going to school.
