So I’m going to be very honest…I have been disheartened. I have been making a real effort on campus to get people interested and yet it seems like the odds are against me and everyone who has taken any sort of interest has sort of faded from the picture.
But, in light of the fact that we have all these other schools to look after I think its been a sort of encouragement and even inspiration. I have a girl from Lake Forest whose dreaming big and she’s working hard towards it. There’s another girl who recently got engaged and a to become stepmother taking the initiative to become a campus challenge leader.
And its making me ask myself whether I’m giving up too easily, so despite the odds think its possible to go against the grain of indifference or skepticism and just kind of work harder. So this week I decided to keep trying different organizations on campus even though I’ve been turned down by so many (really nicely and oh so subtley) and finally got through to one for World AIDS Week. So this week we’ve planned some events like human chains and the orphan t-shirts from Acting on AIDS. So, I’m actually excited and looking forward to really getting the word out there this week and hopefully breaking the nonchalance - one by one!

December 1, World AIDS Day, is just around the corner and more than 30 million people are still estimated to be living with HIV/AIDS around the globe. Use the day as it was intended: to raise awareness and to remind those around you that our actions make a real difference in ending this epidemic.
You can see if there is a World AIDS Day event on your campus or register your own event now so that people in your area will know it’s happening and can attend here: http://www.one.org/event/campusdec1/
After the event, send in a summary of your event along with photos and videos using our handy online tool by Sunday, December 2, at Midnight PST. The campus with the best event and/or display scores 10,000 points, but even if you don’t win the challenge you still score 4,000 points for having an event.
Good luck everyone!

The photo of the week contest this week was no contest at all. St. John’s University – Staten Island walked away with the prize with their giant 90 person human ONE logo.

Some other notable photos this week:
The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey’s photo of their international club holding signs saying “ONE” in a host of different languages.

SHU gathered together their student government and got them to pose of a massive group shot.

Sacred Heart University blew away the competition for the turkey day family involvement challenge. They recruited 102 friends, family, and relatives over the holiday weekend. That’s their second weekly challenge win, and good for 10,000 points.
In a surprising second place finish was the recently dubbed “Come Back Kid,” St. John’s University – Staten Island with 62 sign ups.

I’m still full from Thanksgiving dinner. My belt definitely had to be loosened by the time pumpkin pie came around. With so much food consumed on that one day alone and with the following days of turkey sandwiches, it is hard to relate to world hunger. 842 million people suffer from chronic hunger. That is a huge number that can’t really be grasped by the human mind. However we can understand small numbers like 10 grains of rice. 10 grains can be held in your hand, a soup or the last bite of takeout.
By the power of the internet at Freerice.com, you can add another bite to someone’s meal. For every word you answer correctly on their website, Freerice.com will donate 10 grains of rice to the UN’s World Food Progamme. Lets make a mountain of rice that will be beyond human grasp.

Farmworkers who pick tomatoes for Burger King earn 40 to 50 cents for every 32-pound bucket of tomatoes they pick, a rate that has not risen significantly in nearly 30 years. Workers who labor from dawn to dusk must pick two tons of tomatoes to earn $50 in one day. Recently, McDonalds and others have agreed to higher wages for these workers, but Burger King has not.
Tell Burger King to improve farmworker wages.

Wingate University has been very quite in the Campus Challenge so far, but for last week’s challenge they showed that their group is as hard-core as can be.
It was hunger and homelessness week at Wingate University and a core group of people decided to sleep outside for a week, not go back to the dorms or apartments, live out of a garbage bag, and eat only one meal a day.

While this effort helped spread awareness, it didn’t convey the scope of extreme poverty or our ability to solve it. Still, it was such an impressive effort that we couldn’t help but award 2,500 points.

A few weeks ago St. Johns University in Staten Island was experiencing some startup problems. On November 5th they were in 716th place after breaking off of their sister campus in Queens, NY. Have no fear because now they are not just running smoothly, but racing ahead in the standing (26th place). St. Johns has truly come together as seen in this 90 strong ONE human logo. Watch out because I’m predicting they are going to make it into the top 20 very soon.

When it comes to voting contests, no one wins ‘em like Hoftra. The Pride just nabbed their second photo-of-the-week award with a couple hundred votes for their mascots in ONE gear.
