Duke Dude Does Durham Declaration
Duke University student Shawn Selleck grabbed some headlines today for his awesome work getting the city of Durham, North Carolina declared the state’s first a City of ONE. In his own words:
Duke University’s ONE Campus Challenge standings received a large boost on Monday, November 19th as our home city, Durham, became North Carolina’s first City of ONE. I received a proclamation signed by Mayor William “Bill” Bell from the Durham City Council tonight, proclaiming November 19th, 2007 “City of ONE” Day. The local NBC crew anxiously approached me to film a post-presentation interview. A link to the summary of the interview was immediately placed on the front page of the NBC17 website.
It was a great evening, as Andy Krzmarzick, a member of the area Triangle ONE group joined me to videotape the presentation, which we hope to have up on YouTube soon. I met Andy through the local RESULTS chapter which we are teaming up with to bring some politicians to Duke University in the near future. Two hours after the presentation, I received a phone call from The Chronicle, Duke University’s newspaper. I conducted an interview with them and hope to provide a link to that as well tomorrow.
There is also a blurb up on MSNBC right now. Check it out.
Picture below is Shawn holding the freshly minted proclamation. Now that’s kickin’ poverty’s butt in style (in a ONE shirt).
