IMF: May the best candidate win

In the summer of 2011, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) launched a search for a new Managing Director. This was an important moment for the fight against extreme poverty, as the IMF sets key global economic policies that impact the world's poorest people (take debt relief, for instance). So, ONE launched a campaign to ask that the IMF stick to its 2009 promise and conduct an "open, merit-based, and transparent" process for upcoming elections.

49,000 ONE members from across the world signed a petition asking for the hiring process to be fair, open and transparent. And while  the IMF didn't deliver on the open or transparent piece, the selection of Christine Lagarde as managing director was a promising decision.

Ms. Lagarde has a wealth of experience and she won the support of many African nations during her candidacy. She also vowed to dedicate special attention to low-income countries-especially in Africa-and made it known that the IMF should strive to be even more diverse.

ONE looks forward to working together with Christine Lagarde to ensure that the IMF truly works for the world's poorest people.
