ONE is a global advocacy and campaigning organization backed by more than 2 million people from around the world dedicated to fighting extreme poverty and preventable disease, particularly in Africa. ONE has offices in Washington, DC, London, Berlin, Brussels, and Abuja. This position will be based in ONE's Washington, DC office.
The U.S. Policy Director will be responsible for leading the global policy team's policy engagement in the U.S. market. This position will coordinate all policy input on legislative and campaign efforts in the U.S. with the U.S. Advocacy team. The U.S. Policy Director will also work in coordination with the European Policy Director and Global Policy Director to guide a proactive and coordinated policy team agenda. This position reports to ONE's Global Policy Director and manages a team of policy staff.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Lead policy engagement in U.S. market and serve as primary point of contact with the U.S. Advocacy team; provide policy input in U.S. team strategy development and ensure that organization policy needs are met in the U.S. by making assignments across all policy staff accordingly.
- Manage and recruit a growing team of specialized policy managers and research assistants
- Help the Global Policy Director drive the Policy team's agenda in a proactive manner
- Drive forward lengthier, longer-term research projects
- Maintain daily proactive communication with European offices to ensure all global needs are being met
- Ensure that the Global Policy Director is aware of critical issues, moments and strategic opportunities on key issues
- Build and maintain a broad network of policy contacts, representing ONE at conferences and meetings and building the ONE brand within policy circles
- Proactively liaise with ONE's Africa team and African leaders and experts, as necessary
SPECIFIC TYPES OF KNOWLEDGE, SKILL & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
- Deep substantive knowledge (7+ years experience) of development policy issues and a Master's degree in relevant field
- Experience managing multiple projects concurrently
- Ability to think and work successfully across teams
- Proven ability to turn policy objectives into action
- Excellent team player and team building skills
- Strong management skills and experience managing teams
- Strong communication skills-both written and oral
- Understanding of the U.S. legislative process, Congressional structures and operations and an awareness of the political climate around development issues
- Understanding of the links amongst all key development priorities
- Sensitivity/understanding of political ramifications of development priorities
