Senior Policy Manager- Trade and Investment

ONE is a global advocacy and campaigning organization backed by more than 2 million people from around the world dedicated to fighting extreme poverty and preventable disease, particularly in Africa. ONE has offices in Washington, DC, London, Berlin, Brussels, and Abuja.  This position will be based in ONE's Washington, DC or London office.

The Senior Policy Manager - Trade and investment is responsible for providing high-level policy analysis and writing on issues key to ONE's mission, specifically in areas of trade and economic development -- including trade policy, investment, and private sector development - in support of ONE's advocacy and legislative goals.  This position reports to the Policy Director, Europe.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manage all aspects of specific trade and investment policy issues (e.g. WTO, bilateral preferences, investment promotion and business development in Africa) including research, policy analysis, preparing briefing papers, web posts, talking points and press releases
  • Monitor trade and investment policy for development, particularly in the EU and US but also across the major emerging economies (e.g. G20)
  • Develop relationships government, private sector organizations and NGOs working on trade, investment and private sector development issues
  • Work internally across other organizational teams to identify and impact opportunities for policy change on these issues
  • Represent ONE at meetings and conferences on specific policy topics, as needed
  • Develop/maintain relationships with key contacts in African countries on specific policy issues and experiences implementing key programs
  • Follow news and related reports on trade and investment policy issues relevant to ONE's policy mission

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

  • Masters degree, preferably in international affairs, development or economics
  • 5+ years experience working on trade and investment in the public, private or voluntary sectors, particularly in Africa
  • Basic understanding of the links between advocacy, policy-making, legislation, and implementation of programs
  • Specific experience with at least one of the following substantive policy issues - trade policy and development, investment, private sector development and/or international financial institutions
  • Ability to synthesize policy documents with an eye to key points and relevance to ONE
  • Ability to work as part of a global team and direct the work of other team members
  • Quick turnaround research skills-must have the ability to seek out key facts and statistics that help explain complicated policy topics to broad audience
  • Excellent research, writing, and analytical skills
  • Ability to work in a fast paced environment, with shifting priorities and occasional heavy workloads
  • Generally very well-organized; proven ability to multi-task
